2016 SEC Pick of the Week – Week Ten
With apologies for getting last week’s article up a few days late (I’m feeling much better, by the way), let’s get right to the recap.
With the Florida Gators’ 24-10 win over the Georgia Bulldogs we’re now 7-2 in our SEC Pick of the Week segment for 2016. After long ago sealing a winning record for the season we now head into the heart of conference play as teams begin their push for title games on a roll.
Don’t worry, that statement isn’t an indicator of things to come. As for week ten…
SEC Pick of the Week: Georgia (-2 1/2) at Kentucky, 7:30pm ET SECN.
I honestly can’t believe I’m going with the Bulldogs here. You can call it a hunch if you want to, I have lots of them and they have treated me fairly good thus far.
The Bulldogs will rely on a solid running game led by Nick Chubb (not ignoring the players to coaches meetings that have occurred) and the Wildcats’ running defense is suspect at best. Not to say that Kentucky can’t counter with the same but this has Georgia written all over it.
I’m not really sure why the spread is less than a field goal to be honest. The 2 1/2 points seems a little low and could provide good value.
But then again maybe there is solid reason why. Georgia is 100th in the country in total offense and 102nd in scoring offense, so…
To hell with it. Let’s flip that saying. The Bulldogs in a squeaker.
Upset alert: No. 11 Florida (-5 1/2) at Arkansas, 3:30pm ET CBS.
As big a Gators’ fan as I am I have a hard time truly believing that they are the eleventh best football team in the country. And I’ll admit that it probably has a lot to do with the fact that we haven’t really had an offense since 2009.
Currently, let’s see:
The Gators’ four-headed monster at running back is down to two – assuming Jordan Conkrite and Mark Thompson don’t return, and if they do will the coaches trust them?
We’re in the tenth week of the season and quarterback Luke del Rio will be facing his first true road game. Sure, he started at Vanderbilt but c’mon, anybody who has ever been inside that stadium especially if it’s against Florida or Tennessee knows that it’s full of visiting fans.
Oh, and yep, the receivers have been, yep, they’ve been playing I swear. Okay, Antonio Callaway isn’t bad but aside from him I swear they do exist. Brandon Powell, where are you?
Can the defense keep it up? Remember, this team is a second-half against Tennessee from being a probable top-5 team.
Keep an eye on: No. 1 Alabama (-7 1/2) at No. 13 LSU, 8:00pm ET CBS.
Oh, man. Just imagine the chaos in the college football world if Alabama were to lose this game. I don’t think they are going to lose, but stranger things have happened.
Death Valley will be rocking for sure and head coach Ed Orgeron will be fighting for his job – errr, to gain the title of permanent coach. Running back Leonard Fournette seems to have finally found his footing and yes, weird things happen at night Baton Rouge.
Will this be one of them?
Trending up: Texas A&M and the CFB Playoffs.
How interesting is the college football playoff committee first rankings of the season. One loss Texas A&M is ranked in the top-four while the undefeated Washington Huskies aren’t. It’s great playing in the SEC with that reputation isn’t it?
At the same time though, it’ll be tough for the Aggies to remain there at the end of the season. If Washington wins out, their in for sure and it’ll be tough for the committee to place two SEC teams, especially one that doesn’t win their division in the playoffs.
But then again, remember what finally ended the BCS? Alabama and LSU playing for the National Championship.
Trending down: Butch Jones and the Tennessee Volunteers.
With their best chance to make it to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game since 2007 the Volunteers decided instead to lose three straight conference games and fall behind the Gators and the Kentucky Wildcats in the SEC East standings.
Is Butch Jones’ job as head man in danger? Possibly. But he’ll likely survive unless Tennessee falters further. One thing working in his favor is their remaining schedule: home games against Tennessee Tech, Kentucky and Missouri and a final road game at Vanderbilt.
