2016 SEC Pick of the Week – Week Seven
That’s how we do it, Auburn. With the Tigers’ 38-14 victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs last Saturday we’re now 4-2 on the year in our weekly SEC Picks of the Week. That’s not too terrible of a winning percentage at the halfway mark.
As for what this weekend holds, there’s really only three conference games to choose from. You’ve got homecoming at Florida against Missouri, Alabama traveling to Knoxville to take on Tennessee and Ole Miss at Arkansas.
So, let’s do this.
SEC Pick of the Week: Missouri at No. 18 Florida (-13 1/2), 4:00pm ET SECN.
Does anybody remember the last time Missouri was in Gainesville for homecoming weekend? I surely do. I was sitting there watching from my seats in the sunshine section (my favorite seats in the house, I think) as the Tigers ended the Will Muschamp era for the Gators with a 42-13 victory.
And the game wasn’t even as close as the final score indicated.
But this year is going to be different. I just know it will be. Why? Well, for starters there are numerous reports that suggest quarterback Luke del Rio will make his return from a knee injury. The offense, as a result, presumably will operate much more efficiently.
You know the rest and how it works. Trickle down economics, baby. With a better functioning offense the Gators’ defense will be more rested – and let’s face it, the defense does need a rest.
But then again, they’ve been off for two weeks so who knows. Anyway, let’s get to it: Missouri is bad. At best, No. 4 in the East when this is all said and done. They have weapons at wide receiver but that’s about it.
They’re about to go into Gainesville to play a team hungry to play. There are also players there who remember 2014 and want payback.
The Gators will win and they’re going to win big.
Upset Alert: No. 12 Ole Miss (-7 1/2) at No. 22 Arkansas, 7:00pm ET ESPN.
There is no way that Ole Miss is the twelfth best team in the country. No way, no how. Also, there is no way that Arkansas is just the 22nd best team in the country. Not even close.
But, at that same time, there must be a reason why this spread has moved a point and a half in Ole Miss’ favor.
When on the Razorbacks are good. Very good. Both teams played Alabama tough and admittedly Ole Miss played them better, errr, well closer. Arkansas is young and hungry and looking for that signature win. It can come this week if the breaks fall their way.
And they don’t even need that many I wouldn’t think. I’ll say this too: this will be quarterback Austin Allen’s nationally coming out game. Welcome to show Austin.
Keep an eye on: No. 1 Alabama (-12 1/2) at No. 9 Tennessee, 3:30pm ET CBS.
What to do about Tennessee. I’m just not sure where to place them. Somewhere between the 5th and 20th-best team in the country sounds about right to me. If they could play an entire sixty minutes of football they’d probably be a playoff team.
Basically, combine their 2015 and 2016 seasons and you’ve more than likely found your National Champion. But that’s not how things work. They’ve fallen behind in literally every game but one – and some by more than three touchdowns and managed to win all but one. That loss by the way, was a double overtime game to Texas A&M.
If they can play for an entire game they’ve got a chance in this one.
Trending up: Texas A&M.
Despite my (many) reservations of Volunteers, the Aggies looked pretty good in their double overtime home win over Tennessee which included a 21-7 jump start out of the gate.
I think it’s time to take the Aggies as a serious challenger to Alabama’s SEC West crown/dominance.
Trending down: The SEC, LSU and the media.
For as great as the SEC is as a conference, you’d think they’d be able to handle the media much better than what transpired in the postponement (cancelation?) of the Florida-LSU game this past weekend.
It seemed like every conversation or detail, no matter how minor, was published. For better or worse that’s never really the best way to handle things. Usually.
Also, in regards to LSU: Really? You’re going to go there – and you know what I’m talking about, with a hurricane. Really? Okay. Katrina and all. Shameful.
*UPDATE* – Florida and LSU have agreed to play on November 19th in Baton Rouge. In return LSU will play the Gators in Gainesville in both 2017 and 2018.

Yeah Nolan really… Why is it everyone else played Sat or Sun but Foley wouldn’t hear of it. Sankey was played and strong-armed by Foley and shoulda been more involved in this decision last week
Well, moving forward Sankey will have more authority in decisions like this. But it’s more about LSU not showing compassion re: a hurricane. The Gators have had 3 home games canceled or postponed due to weather since 2005. It’s not like they don’t know how to handle it.
It’s also about resources. Regardless of the weather on Saturday by Thursday Gainesville was right in the middle of the hurricane’s path. Also, the fire department, police and other emergency units were requested to be in other areas of the state. So if you want to play a game with none of that by all means go ahead. Throw in the fact that a lot of players (52 of them) have family and are from the islands or the east coast of Florida.
It was also LSU not doing a thing but saying “we are having a home game on the 19th” “we deserve it”
What was once the most cordial rivalry in the SEC probably isn’t anymore and it’s LSU’s fault.
LSU offered to play the game in BR from the start and that’s when it became a battle of wills among the AD’s. I just find it interesting that NC and SC were in the “same boat” but evidently made arrangements to handle things…emergency personnel etc. No reason to get testy about it…although I do understand the Sonic commercial lol
Different areas of the country and thus, different areas of the storm. And of course LSU would offer to play it at home… another home game us always good. Because, you know, the people of the Louisiana are such humanitarians. Haha.
But hey, it’s all good. I really am happy with the result. I’ll take it. UF loses short term, barely, but wins in the long run big time. The only real losers are the businesses of Gainesville: whether it’s a hotel, a mom and pop store, food establishment or a gas station. $7.8 million in lost revenue (projected, sure)
Overall is nothing to sneeze at. As for a lost recruiting weeekend, meh, it’s Florida.
Yep big economic impact…so it should be easy to understand why LSU wouldn’t give up its Nov 19. I just think Foley and Sankey shoulda been more flexible to work it out within the original weekend… sorry you got your blood pressure up and have such a disdain for La. over this…just glad you’re not part of the premium picks section…it would make me feel like an abused customer…after all, you should only be giving football opinions and not taking a shot at other schools with your personal opinions in your column. I didn’t think that’s what this site was about.
It’s a matter of opinion, that’s all. And it’s mostly towards the LSU administration.
