Tennessee 2013 Spring Preview
The Derek Dooley experiment at Tennessee mercilessly came to an end for Volunteer fans last November when he was dismissed after posting a 15-21 record in his three-year tenure with the Vols, the longest stretch of futility for the storied program since 1911. New head coach Butch Jones and the Volunteers start spring practice today, March 9. Here is our Tennessee 2013 spring preview.
This is going to be interesting to watch also (as is Auburn). Jones has a solid coaching background and would seem to be a good hire (much better than Dooley). But what was he, their 4th choice? I think he’s going to need another recruiting class before he can compete. He had a pretty good class for his first year, which isn’t easy to do (Muschamp’s at UF was very average).
He was at least 3rd choice (from what I have read Gruden was never really interested).
I think the Vols upgraded big-time here in terms of coaching, but they are definitely a notch or two behind most of the other SEC teams in terms of talent.
Good (but long) read here about Jones: https://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/21932672/with-plenty-of-work-ahead-jones-tackles-makeover-at-tennessee
