Notre Dame put together a spectacular season in 2012 that finished with a berth in the BCS National Championship against Alabama. The Irish were thoroughly throttled by the Tide, but the appearance in the game returned the Irish to the national discussion. Notre Dame begins spring practice today and the Spring Game is schedule for April 21, 2013 at 1 p.m. Steve Herring of Herring Bone Sports provides us with some great information for our Notre Dame 2013 spring preview.

    Thanks guys – great questions and I think it reflects well on what should be expected of 2013 Notre Dame.

    I did write this prior to former 5-Star QB recruit Gunnar Kiel deciding to leave Notre Dame last week. The mix of talent remaining among the four players (Golson, Rees, Hendrix, Zaire) is still very intriguing, but I’d back off my “most diverse in America” statement a bit without the cannon arm of Kiel in the mix.

      Nice write up. Whether 2013 is another undefeated year or not, I think we can all agree that the trajectory is distinctly upward at ND.

      As I recall, at this time last year, here’s where ND was at:
      – Still a lot of heartburn over jettisoning Dayne Crist
      – Lots of questions about Kelly
      – Lots more heartburn over the prospect of BK being blindly loyal to Tommy Rees and not giving Golson or Hendrix a chance
      – The schedule was going to be a killer
      – Many predicted as few as 6 wins

      What a difference a year makes. Crist proved at KU he can’t play (much to my surprise); BK did the right thing and got EG on the field; the schedule wasn’t as tough as some thought, with UM, MSU and USC having lousy years; and ND went 12-0. BTW, I said at the time that I felt they’d be more likely to go 10-2 than 8-4, though I thought the games they’d lose would be MSU and OK.

      Fast forward to today:
      – Another great recruiting class with two frosh capable of contributing right away (Redfield and Vanderdoes);
      – EG with a year under his belt and looking like he could be special (he’s not there yet, however);
      – Improving WRs; a veteran OL; and overall a team that has embraced the BK mantra of playing tough, hard nosed winning football.

      2013 is going to be a great year. I can’t predict 12-0, but if I did I’d no longer get laughed out of the room as would have been the case last year. But what the hell? I’ll say 12-0, barring a barrage of injuries to key guys.

        Forgot one thing about the “this time last year” part: There was IMMENSE consternation over the incredibly sloppy, turnover prone ball ND played in 2011. It easily cost them 3 games (USF, UM, FSU); maybe 4 with USC.

        Can’t speak for everybody, but more than anything else, the sloppiness combined with his TR love affair made me wonder if BK was ready to run an elite program.

        Those questions no longer exist. Only downside about BK now is his dalliance with the NFL, which he handled about as badly as possible, a perfect negative 10, make me wonder how long he’ll stick around.
