2018 SEC Pick of the Week – Week Seven

At least this time it was a full point.

Alabama beat Arkansas 65 to 31 which is a 34 point victory, falling just short of the 35-point spread. As a result, we fall to 2-4 on the year and 27-19 since 2015. Remarkably though, two of our four losses this year have been by one point or less.

But we move on and move forward because that’s just what we do. No looking back.

It’s like on those old Coors Light head coach interview commercials in which someone asks Mike Sitka if he wants to go to a 1970’s themed party.

“I don’t believe in looking back at the past. The past is for cowards.”

I find that so amusing even though I’m a history guy. Love the stuff.

Week seven…

*For the first time ever there will be two SEC Pick of the Week games featured this week. Why? I don’t know. But I can tell you I’m more confident in the second featured game than the first.

SEC Pick of the Week: No. 2 Georgia (-7) at No. 13 LSU, 3:30pm ET on CBS.

As I’ve said a few times, I’m expecting the Tigers to fall apart at some point of the season. I think it begins now though.

After last week’s loss to Florida they now welcome Georgia to Baton Rouge for their second-toughest game of the season after Alabama.

Things could get ugly quick if things do fall apart but that has been LSU’s modus operandi for the better of a decade now. Which is strange for a program of their stature but fitting for a program that doesn’t offer sympathy or understanding of a hurricane diaster.

But back to the game for a moment.

Georgia is without question one of the best two or three teams in the country. LSU probably got lucky against Auburn and Miami which led to their inflated ranking.

The Bulldogs on the other hand, well, sure theyve looked mortal a few times this year and their victory over Tennessee wasn’t overly impressive, I guess, but come on, they should win this one with ease.

If this game was at night, I’d probably be feeling a little different. But it’s not and the Tigers (and Baton Rouge) just aren’t the same during the day. I’m picking the Dawgs.

SEC Pick of the Week II: No. 14 Florida (-7) at Vanderbilt, 12:00pm ET on ESPN.

There’s a few things in life that I’m sure that are near certainties. One of them being that most of the time the Gators struggle in Nashville. For whatever the reason is the games just always seem closler than they should.

But this time it feels different.

The Commodores don’t really have anyone that scares the Gators on either side of the ball. The last player who did, Ralph Webb, is long gone.

The more interesting note on this game in regards too the spread is that it opened as an eight-point game and has dropped to seven.

Interesting, indeed. But I’m not buying it. The Gators will win big.

Upset alert: Tennessee at No. 21 Auburn (-17), 12:00pm ET on SECN.

I’m telling you what, Tennessee might just pull this one out. I think they’ll cover for sure, but an outright win wouldn’t surprise me either.

Both teams have played poorly throughout the first half of the season, but I’ve got a feeling that the Vols are due.

Keep an eye on: Missouri at No. 1 Alabama (-28), 7:00pm ET on ESPN.

I went with Alabama last week (see above) and lost. Why did I lose? Because the Crimson Tide defense has a few cracks in it.

Missouri has one of the better quarterbacks in all of college football in Drew Lock and as a result they can score some points.

I like Alabama to win, probably rather easily but 28 points is a lot. The thinking here is that Missouri is within a touchdown or two throughout most of the game before Alabama pulls away late.

Trending up: Florida.

You can call me a homer if you want but I said it last week and I’ll say it again: Them Gator boys look good.

If you remember way back at the beginning of the season when I said Florida could win anywhere from six to ten games, depending on how they adjusted to the new coaching staff, well I think they’ve adjusted just fine.

They get Vanderbilt next in Nashville in what should push them to a 6-1 overall record and 4-1 in SEC play.

Trending down: Auburn.

They looked bad, very bad, in their 23-9 loss to Mississippi State last Saturday. For a team that some projected to have an outside-shot at the playoffs this is not where they were expected to be.

They get the Volunteers next in what should be a win, maybe.

Oh here he goes still sore about the Hurricane…Matthew I think it was. Cat 1 or 2.
Michael Cat 4…now that’s a hurricane to be reckoned with.LOL
BTW Ga is at LSU, not between the hedges. If you gonna cap a POW at least get the venue right.

Thanks, that sentence has been updated. And for the record, I’m not sore about anything. LSU, well their AD at least, looked weak and not in tune with that area during the Florida issue a couple of years ago. But hey, the Gators won (goal line stand!) and everything worked out as it deserved to.
