SEC Pick of the Week – Week Five

A half a point.

The Georgia Bulldogs just couldn’t quite get there. Despite beating the Missouri Tigers 43-29, they fell short of covering the 14.5 point spread.

As a result, we fall to a dreadful 1-3 on the year, which is by far our worst start ever. Overall, we’re now 25-18 to the good, so we’ve at least got that going for us.

To change the subject…

After attending last Saturday’s Florida-Tennessee game I’ve been to Neyland Stadium a total of six times, all to see the Gators.

My record: 5-1. The loss of course was the 2004 Dallas Baker game in which if he’s not called for a bogus personal foul in the last few minutes and the referees start the clock on time the Vols don’t kick a 50-yard field goal as time expired to win.

Yes, I’m still a little bitter about that one.

Worth noting about all that though is the fact that other than maybe the 2014 Florida-Missouri game in The Swamp, last Saturday in Neyland was the quietest I’ve ever heard a stadium in my life.

Which was a complete reversal from 2004, which was the loudest I’ve ever heard a stadium in my life.

And now that I think about it, yeah, The Swamp was probably louder that day against Missouri than Neyland was the other night only because of the vitrol slung towards the shape of the program and Will Muschamp.

I still believe that he was given a raw deal. But I’ve talked enough about that the last few years.

On to week five…

SEC Pick of the Week: Ole Miss at No. 5 LSU (-9.5), 9:00pm ET on ESPN.

I’ll take the bait. Literally.

I’m going for it. Bring on the LSU Tigers. Conference game or not, let’s see if they can keep their run going (and see if I’m not too late).

I still think they’re a flawed football team, but I’m starting to think that maybe that just doesn’t matter.

Plus, Death Valley at night! Tiger in a romp.

Upset alert: Florida at No. 23 Mississippi State (-7), 6:00pm ET on ESPN.

In a matchup of two teams that have lost to Kentcky – yes, you read that right – the Gators and Dan Mullen travel to Starkeville to take on the Bulldogs.

Mullen’s return to the program that he basically built will be interesting to say the least. The cowbells are going to be out for blood.

Best case is that the Gators win and their reload is on. The worst case is that the Bulldogs win and everyone goes back to placing them fourth in the east. Oh, wait, that’s all anyone ever had them? Cool.

There’s also a reason that the line for this game opened up at -8.5 for Mississippi State but keeps trending towards Florida. This could (and probably should) be a close one.

Keep an eye on: South Carolina at No. 17 Kentucky in a pick’em, 7:30pm ET on SECN.

So if this game was in Columbia, South Carolina the Gamecocks would be favored by a field goal?

I see this game going one of two ways. The more likely outcome of Carolina wining in a rout or they win a close one.

Now watch, the Wildcats pull out yet another victory.

Trending up: Kentucky.

Last week we sort of focused on the western division, so let’s take a look at the east this week.

Yeah, OK, Kentucky is good. I’ll admit it. But I still have a hard time believing that they’re the second best team in the division.

Honestly, I’ll say they are fourth or fifth and yes, I know they aren’t playing like it and the current standings don’t reflect that.

But we’re just at the quarter pole of the season and a lot can happen from now until late November. We’ll see how the next month or so goes.

For now though, good for them. It’s been a while.

Trending down: Tennessee.

Ahh, the Vols. Couldn’t happen to a classier group of people. Out of all the stadiums I’ve been to and all the college football fans I’ve met, by and large the Vols as a group are the worst. They’re also the most delusional, by far.

So it’s fitting that this is where they are. It’s not really their fault either. Bad geography (read: natural recruiting base) is the primary culprit.

It’s going to be a long time until they are relevant in the SEC and nationally again. Buckle down Vols, it’s going to get rough.
