2017 SEC Pick of the Week – Week Twelve
For what seems like the fourth or fifth time this season, no matter which team I throw my belief behind they lose. And they always seem to lose bad. And very quickly.
This week’s victim: Georgia. Who lost 40-17 to Auburn. Probably because I picked them to win handily.
LSU, Auburn (twice, maybe), Mississippi State and now Georgia, have all suffered from what appears to be The Saturday Edge SEC Curse.
I’m open to suggestions on the name.
Another downside to said curse, if that’s what you want to call it, is that I’m having my worst year here at The Saturday Edge making our weekly SEC picks.
I’m still ahead on the season, albeit barely, with a 6-5 record. The loss also drops me to 24-14 since the beginning of the 2015 season.
So, like a quarterback who throws an interception, let’s forget about last week and move on to week twelve shall we…
SEC Pick of the Week: UAB at Florida (-10.5), 4:00pm ET, SECN.
Since the beginning of the season the Gators have lost 24 or 25 players to injury or suspension. Oh, and their head coach.
That’s a lot.
UAB has been more competitive than people thought they would be ever since they football program was brought back. They can score some points. Spencer Brown can run the football.
But I think playing UAB is just what the doctor ordered. Despite Malik Zaire now out and back to back losses to Missouri and South Carolina, the Gators can and should win this game.
They played better against Carolina than I thought they would. They still care!!! But in their final tune-up before FSU comes to town and Eva bowl practices on the line, I think they show up.
For the first time in a long time.
Upset alert: Missouri (-8.5) at Vanderbilt, 7:30pm ET, SECN.
At one point this season the Missouri Tigers were far and away the worst team in the SEC. And by saying that I mean easily the first month to month and a half or so.
Now however they’re playing some of the best football in the entire conference.
As for Vanderbilt, well, turns out they are your father’s Vanderbilt. But, that doesn’t mean that they can get up and surprise somebody every once in a while.
Keep an eye on: Kentucky at No. 7 Georgia (-21.5), 3:30pm ET, CBS.
Kentucky is by no means a bad team this year. They’ll likely (read: will) finish second in the SEC East this season giving Mark Stoops a really nice year to build upon.
Georgia on the other hand dropped a few spots following their first loss of the season last weekend to Auburn. This came after reaching No. 1 in the country for the first time, since, well, I’m not really sure. It had been a while I’m sure.
Trending up: SEC No. 2.
Here we go again. Around and around goes the carousel. As mentioned above, who wants it?
We’re back to Auburn, folks. Their win over Georgia proves it at least for this weekend. Which of course means they’re sure to lose next week.
Trending down: Offen…err, quarterbacks.
It wasn’t but a few years ago when teams like Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, Tennessee and a couple of others all had very highly ranked offenses.
Sure, a few of those teams still have respected offenses, but do any of those teams really truly scare the crap out of you?
No. I didn’t think so.
Now I’ll ask you this: Aside from maybe Georgia with a quick nod to Mississippi State, do any of those teams have what you would call an elite quarterback?
No. I didn’t think so.
Trending down II: Coaching rumors.
Both Florida and Tennessee are in need of head coaches, so naturally: Chip Kelly to Florida? Jon Gruden or Peyton Manning to Rocky Top?
Please. Who even starts this crap? About the only rumor that even makes a little sense is Chad Morris to Texas A&M.
One final note, now Arkansas… OK.
