College Gambler – GGG vs Canelo Breakdown and Pick
“Yes I broke his face.”-Gennady Golovkin, aka “Triple G”, “GGG”
That my friend is a born killer. Straight out of Kazakhstan, he serves one purpose. That is to throw some of the meanest and cleanest power punches to the head and body that the boxing world has ever seen. Sitting at 37-0 with 33 wins by knockout it seems as though there is no one who can get in this mans way. That is until the boxing gods decided to put Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on the other side of the ring. Canelo is a Mexican fighter through and through. For those not familiar with the sport, Mexican fighters are known to have a few loose screws when it comes to fighting. These guys are pit bulls. Crazy men. Canelo is sitting on a record of 49-1-1(1 loss to Floyd Money Mayweather) with 34 by way of knockout. They literally live for slamming their fists into other dudes heads until the guy tip toes the line of death. Then they smile and walk away. Come on.
Tale of the Tape
GGG has the advantage of being 1 inch taller and a reach that is 3 inches longer than Canelo. These may seem like minor details but can add up in the later rounds. The fight will be held at the middle weight division(160lb MAX) for a title belt that really doesn’t matter at this point. Basically whoever wins is the baddest man on the planet. Ever since the heavyweight division died the welter weight(147lbs) and middle weight division have been the home to the best boxers in the last decade. So this one is for all the marbles.
GGG is clearly known for his knockout ability and way of controlling the fight keeping everyone on the edge of their damn seat just waiting to see the power punch the you can feel through the TV. In his last bout against Daniel Jacobs he was unable to hit the big shot and the fight ended up going to decision. This caused concern for boxing analysts. If he lost his knockout touch how will he fend in the ring against the killer that is Canelo? Also keep in mind GGG is 35 years old, Canelo is sitting at the ripe age of 27. Night and day in boxing years.
Lets not forget, Canelo’s last fight was against Chavez Jr. A complete bum who walked into the ring with a gut and not an once of training. So that didn’t really show us anything on Canelo.
What to Expect
This fight is looking to become an instant classic. If you are familiar with boxing I ask you to please sit down and not get mad at me here. I’m predicting this fight will be comparable to Gatti vs Ward I. I know I know its considered one of the greatest fights of all time and also contains the greatest round of boxing of all time. Round 9, take a look for yourself. If you want some good fight hype prep I suggest you watch as many fights in the Gatti Ward trilogy that you can. It defines boxing to its purest form, two men giving the fans everything they had. I see these two men doing the same this Saturday.
The Pick
Well shit. I forgot I was gona have to do this. I’m going with GGG at -150 ML. I love the guy, its almost impossible not to. Hes disciplined, powerful, and relentless. If you’re a big knockout guy I’d suggest putting money on a knockout within 6-8 rounds. Due to Canelo’s Mexican fighting roots(and the fact that hes rumored to be WAY overweight) I see him taking risks early and GGG giving a signature power hook to the liver and DOWN GOES CANELOOOOOOOOOO!
