2014 Big Ten Power Rankings – Week 9

Maryland WR Stefon Diggs

East Division

1. Michigan State 6-1 (3-0)The Old Brass Spittoon returns to East Lansing as the Spartans ran past the Hoosiers 56-17 scoring the games final 42 points. Conner Cook didn’t look great, but his receivers are awesome.

Coming Up: Oct. 25th vs. Michigan- The Spartans continue their hunt for a playoff spot. A win over hated Michigan might not do much in terms of turning heads, but a win over the Wolverines is always nice.

2. Ohio State 5-1 (2-0)The Buckeyes put the hurt on Rutgers and are now back in the hunt for a Big Ten title. They have rebounded nicely from the early loss to Virginia Tech.

Coming Up: Oct. 25th at Penn State- Usually this is a great game between two great programs. Happy Valley will be electric as always at night. The Buckeyes, on paper, should roll, but Penn State always is tough at home.

3. Maryland 5-2 (2-1)Maryland came back to defeat the Hawkeyes for their first home Big Ten win. The Terps are one win away from bowl eligibility.

Coming Up: Oct. 25th– at Wisconsin- The road to the sixth win gets bumpy when the Terps head to Madison to take on Melvin Gordon and the Badgers.

4. Rutgers 5-2 (1-2)Rutgers was rudely greeted by Ohio State in Columbus and now the Knights continue their tour of the big boys of the Big Ten.

Coming Up: Oct. 25th at Nebraska- The road doesn’t get easier as the Knights travel to Lincoln to take on the Huskers. Can Gary Nova throw his way to victory?

5. Penn State 4-2 (1-2)Penn State has had two weeks to get ready for the Buckeyes. Can they save their season and get the upset win at home?

Coming Up: Oct. 25th vs. Ohio State- The Nittany Lions come in losers of their last two contests and in need of a big time victory, but the Buckeyes look to continue their march to a showdown in East Lansing on November 8th.

6. Michigan 3-4 (1-2)All was quiet on the Michigan front this week as a win over Penn State quelled the chatter in Ann Arbor. This week is going to get rough though.

Coming Up: Oct. 25th at Michigan State- The Wolverines will travel to East Lansing where the Spartans are looking to put another nail in the coffin of the 2014 Wolverine season. Michigan is dogged by three scores and it may not even be that close when the whistle blows.

7. Indiana 3-4 (0-3)Indiana’s season went down hill faster than Bode Miller in his prime. The Hoosiers are reeling due to injuries to their first two quarterbacks. Add in suspect play calling and a very young defense and the rest of the season could be as bleak as the Indiana weather has been.

Coming Up: Oct. 25th OPEN- The Hoosiers have two weeks to get Zander Diamont ready for the Big House.

West Division

1. Nebraska 6-1 (2-1)Nebraska handled Northwestern rather easily to get bowl eligible and stay alive in the West race.

Coming Up: Oct. 25th– vs. Rutgers- The Huskers should stay in the race against Rutgers who comes in as double digit underdogs.

2. Minnesota 6-1 (3-0)Minnesota got a good scare from a very improved Purdue team. The Gophers look like they could be a team of destiny this year.

Coming Up: Oct. 25th– at Illinois- Minnesota should be able to stay atop of the West standings when the week is over.

3. Wisconsin 4-2 (1-1)The Badgers will welcome Maryland to Camp Randall on Saturday as they try and keep pace with Minnesota and Nebraska.

Coming Up: Oct. 25th– vs. Maryland- The Badgers should win if they get Melvin Gordon going early, but they need to put points up against this Maryland offense.

4. Iowa 5-2 (2-1)– Iowa blew an early 14-0 lead and fell to Maryland in their first Big Ten loss.

Coming Up: Oct. 25th – OPEN

5. Northwestern 3-4 (2-2)Northwestern’s flash in the pan success to start the Big Ten season looks like it may be over. Can an open week reignite this squad?

Coming Up: October 25th– OPEN

6. Purdue 3-5 (1-3)Purdue almost had another Big Ten win, but the Gophers came back to win. The good news is that Purdue continues to get better every week.

Coming Up: Oct. 25th– OPEN

7. Illinois 3-4 (0-3)Illinois welcomes the Gophers to Memorial Stadium. Can they possibly stop David Cobb and this running game? Probably not.

Coming Up: October 25th vs. Minnesota.
