2018 SEC Pick of the Week – Week Four

Well now, thank you Arkansas. That wasn’t even close.

Because of your inability to handle North Texas (North Texas!), we fall to 1-2 on the season and 26-17 overall since 2015.

Other than throwing some weight behind Vanderbilt it was a swing and a miss weekend. I see you LSU, now do it again, because I still don’t think you can.

So now, moving on…

I’m just going to go ahead and assume – yes, I know the risks in that – that pretty much all the readers here at DSE are over the age of 21.

Reason being: Oktoberfest is back by Sam Adams! I know, I know, it’s been back for a few weeks now, but forgive me. I don’t get excited for anything else food or drink-wise during the fall. Pumpkin Spice anything (else) is a waste.

Having said that, I see now that Leinenkugel and Yuengling also have Oktoberfest selections of their own. They’re alright, but Sam Adams is still the top dog.

As for other top dogs, man, that would have been the perfect segway to picking the Tennessee Volunteers this week wouldn’t it have been? Get it? Smokey? Tennessee?

But I’m not. I’m 50/50 on my Florida Gators even winning the game this weekend. Both teams have had their fair share of struggles, though I think the Gators have played slightly better overall.

And have the better overall roster.

And have the better coaching staff.

And, yeah, screw it.

Second thought: nope. Not going to happen. Sorry Vols. You still might win, but I’m not taking the bait. Knoxville and Neyland Stadium be damned.

Week four…

SEC Pick of the Week: No. 2 Georgia (-14.5) at Missouri, 12:00pm ET on ESPN.

I’m all in on the Bulldogs at this point. If I had to choose between them and Alabama I might just go Bulldogs.

If Clemson doesn’t pick up their play in a hurry, I think they’ll lose their geip on the second spot in a lot of people’s projections.

On another note: how in the heck did Kirby Smart get the Bulldogs this good this fast? Man, they went from, well, I guess under Mark Right they always under achieved, so yeah, makes sense.

Missouri and quarterback Drew Lock are no joke, especially on offense, but Georgia is on another level.

Take the Bulldogs.

Upset alert: No. 22 Texas A&M at No. 1 Alabama (-27), 3:30pm ET on CBS.

The Crimson Tide are far and away the best team in the SEC.

But they seem due for a close game. The Aggies are playing pretty well and maybe they keep this one kind of close.

Keep an eye on: Florida (-5) at Tennessee, 7:00pm ET on ESPN.

You just knew that I would have to throw this game in here somewhere didn’t you?

If it wasn’t for Florida State, this would be my No. 1 game of the year. As it stands, it’s No. 2 with Georgia as No. 3. I just love this game.

My favorite recent one was in 2014 – although last year’s Hail Mary victory was phenomenal – when the Gators traveled to Knoxville and played 55 minutes of horrible football but somehow won 10-9. Standing on top of the bleachers doing the chomp at all the Volunteer fans who for hours told me that the streak was dead was awesome. Now it’s time to ruin their 20th anniversary celebration of their last national championship.

So, as mentioned above, I just think that despite losing to Kentucky the Gators have just played a little better football than the Volunteers have at this point in the season.

Plus, I think they have the talent advantage at nearly every position.

I could be biased, but we’ll see.

Trending up: LSU.

I’ll admit it, I didn’t see this coming. With wins over Miami and Auburn the Tigers look legit. I still don’t think they’ll be able to keep it up, but they’ve certainly proved me wrong so far.

Maybe they are this good.

Call me crazy, but is anybody else thinking that a Georgia-LSU SEC championship game is possible?

Nah, me either. Alabama looks too good at the moment. We’ll see how things shake out, but LSU has looked impressive.

Though I still have my doubts.

Trending down: The A’s.

I’m looking at you Auburn and Arkansas.

Unless they go on a serious run, Auburn has no shot at any title and Arkansas, well, they have the conference’s worst loss in their back pocket. Are they the SEC’s worst team?
