2018 SEC Football Pick of the Week – Week Two

Well, that was easy.

Follow the rules and you’ll win. Thank you to Tennessee, errr, West Virginia for getting us off to a 1-0 start. We’re now 26-15 overall.

So, now…

Ever watched a movie so many times that you can practically quote the whole thing?

For me, it’s Friday, Major League, Platoon and Varsity Blues just to name a few. And possibly maybe Steel Magnolias.

OK. Yes. Steel Magnolias. Hey, her colors are blush and bashful!

Anyway, there’s a older – I say older because it’s from the mid-90’s – movie starring Nicholas Cage, Sean Connery and Ed Harris called The Rock. It’s a good movie. For those who haven’t seen it, Ed Harris and a bunch of Marines take control of Alcatraz Island and threaten to release poison gas throughout the San Francisco Bay area unless their demands are met. Enter Nicholas Cage, Sean Connery and some Navy Seals.

My point: There’s a scene about halfway through the movie where Cage and Connery are about to enter the morgue through some tunnel stairs and Connery asks Cage if he’s ready. In reply Cage says that he’ll do his best.

And it’s the wrong answer.

In what is probably the greatest movie quote ever, Connery simply replies: “Your best? Losers always whine about their best, winners go home and …. the prom queen.”

I’m sure you can fill in the blanks.

My second point: In football, as in life, that quote applies to everything. Yes, even sports betting.

And if you have to cry, remember what Cameron Diaz said in The Other Woman … “If you have to cry, cry on the inside like a winner.”

For what it’s worth, I’m not really sure what all that was, but thank you for bearing with me. I apologize. My message was lost somewhere between Varsity Blues and Steel Magnolias.

But it’s a great quote isn’t it?

Now, for week two…

SEC Pick of the Week: Kentucky at No. 25 Florida (-14), 7:30pm ET on SECN.

The word of the day: streak. And the best current streak, the last time the Kentucky Wildcats beat the Florida Gators was 1986. The Gators are going for 32 straight victories over the Wildcats.

I don’t ever bet against a streak. I’m also positive the Gators will win big. They’ll probably win by four touchdowns. I’ll say something along the lines of 42-14.

Dan Mullen’s first conference game in charge of the Gators will be an easy win and The Swamp will love it.

Upset alert: No. 18 Mississippi State (-10) at Kansas State, 12:00pm ET on ESPN.

Two questions (and answers) …

How much longer can Bill Snyder keep things going in Manhattan? Forever it seems.

Can Joe Moorhead keep the early momentum up? I’ll say yes.

As a bonus, Bulldog quarterback Nick Fitzgerald is back from his one-game suspension.

I like the Bulldogs here but Kansas State never quite seems to go away easily if at all. Could be a close one.

Keep an eye on: No. 3 Georgia (-10) at No. 24 South Carolina, 3:30pm ET on CBS.

First things first, I’m not going to say that South Carolina is going to win this game. But I do think they can keep it relatively close.

Secondly, these are two of the best teams in the east division. I have Georgia first and then Florida and South Carolina or South Carolina then Florida, whichever you prefer.

I think the Gamecocks keeping this to within two touchdowns is resonable. Can they shave off a few more points? I don’t know.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if the do.

Trending up: Coaching debuts.

It was a great weekend for new coaches in the SEC. All, except for Pruitt out in Tennessee claimed a victory in a big way. To be fair to the Vols though, they easily had the toughest opening game amongst those teams with new head coaches.

Can the group keep it up this week?I’m mostly looking at you Jimbo Fisher.

Trending down: Not much.

Not much to say in regards to trending down this week. Aside from Tennessee, as noted above, the SEC performed well.

I mean literally. Every single SEC team started the season off with a win. I’m not going to throw the Vols under the bus for losing to West Virginia too much.

Now if they lose this Saturday to East Tennessee then we’ll talk.
