SEC Pick of the Week – Week Five
Just like that, it’s gone. The magic of Les Miles at LSU is gone just as fast as our perfect record on the season. While Miles getting fired because he lost to Auburn might be a little harsh it is plainly obvious to everyone that this game was the final nail in the coffin, offensively speaking.
Was it really because he failed to evolve like Nick Saban down in Alabama? Or merely because he just never really recruited a competent quarterback?
Nevertheless, we here at the SEC Pick of the Week do evolve. We’ll bounce back from our loss. We’re 3-1 on the season. That’s better than Miles’ 2-2.
Wait a minute… are we on the hot seat?
SEC Pick of the Week: No. 11 Tennessee (-3 1/2) at No. 25 Georgia, 3:30pm ET CBS.
Welcome to the big time, Tennessee. For the first time in 12 years, 11 games if you will, the Tennessee Volunteers have knocked off the Florida Gators. Their 38-28 come from behind win last weekend exorcized a lot of demons but the meat of their schedule isn’t over yet.
While the Bulldogs got beat badly by Ole Miss last weekend, in recent years the better team has not always won in this rivalry.
The Volunteers have proven to be a second-half team so far on this young season but I don’t think that will be the case down in Athens, Georgia.
Under first-year head coach Kirby Smart the Bulldogs are a learning team while the Volunteers have their best team under Butch Jones. In what was deemed as an SEC East championship season or bust for the Vols they are certainly heading into the right direction thus far.
The Volunteers could explode here, in a good way, and I fully expect them to do so. They’re much better than a field goal over the Bulldogs and they’ll be likely to put this one away early.
Why? Because Alabama and Texas A&M are waiting in the shadows.
Upset Alert: Missouri at LSU (-13 1/2), 7:30pm ET SECN.
The LSU Tigers will turn to former Ole Miss Rebel and USC head coach Ed Orgeron to right the ship before the season slips away against the Tigers on Saturday night.
A team loaded with blue chip players – although not never at quarterback – with a lot to play for this season still, have every chance to change their luck.
And Baton Rouge seems like the perfect place to do that.
But then again how many times have you seen a team fold following the loss of their coach? But hey, Coach O has been here before and probably should still be the head coach of USC … but that’s another argument for another day.
This game could go either way, but LSU has under preformed all season long so I’ll gladly play the wait and see game until they figure out who they are.
Keep an eye on: No. 24 Florida (-10) at Vanderbilt, 12:00pm ET SECN.
Speaking of teams folding, anybody else watch the second half of last week’s Florida-Tennessee game? Man, that was bad. A lot of talk about this kind of loss sticking with a team too.
We’ll see about that.
Tending up: Tennessee (again).
Now that the Vols have broken the whatever spell the Gators had over them can they use it as a launching point for the rest of the season?
They’re in the meat of their schedule but they’r 1-0 so far.
Tending down: LSU administration.
The last couple of years of the Les Miles era wasn’t handled very by the LSU administration on virtually all accounts. So then why would another top-notch coach leave their current position for the mess that is LSU at the moment.
Shades of Auburn near the end of Tommy Tuberville’s time at Toomer’s corner.
