SEC Pick of the Week – Week Four
Time certainly does fly when you’re having fun. It’s hard to believe that we’re almost to the quarter pole of the 2016 college football season already isn’t it?
Anyway, thanks to the South Carolina Gamecocks’ 20-15 victory over the East Carolina Pirates and the very interesting no call on the two-point conversion – thank you, sideline official! – that allowed for that final score to be possible, we’re now 3-0 on the season in our SEC Pick of the Week segment here at The Saturday Edge.
To somewhat steal a line from one of the greatest movies of all time: “What we’ve got here is (a) winning streak.”
Week four is now on the clock. Let’s get this show on the road.
SEC Pick of the Week: No. 18 LSU (-3) at Auburn, 6:00pm ET on ESPN.
Going back to the 2000 season, the home team in this matchup has won 14 of the 16 games that have been played. But, the LSU Tigers have won four of the past five in this rivalry and they’ll need star running back Leonard Fournette more than ever if they want to make it five out of the last six.
Like the Florida Gators, LSU is also relying on a former Purdue Boilermaker quarterback to lead their team. Danny Etling has taken over at QB for Brandon Harris and the LSU offense has looked much better since.
And while the LSU defense hasn’t been nearly as potent as it has been in the past, it’s still a lot better than Auburn’s. Plus, if you needed a coach to come up with a big play to win a game, who else would you pick other than Les Miles?
Stay with LSU until that magic runs out. Judging from the spread – this game opened at LSU -2 and has gone up a point – most people are seeing it too.
Upset Alert: No. 19 Florida at No. 14 Tennessee (-6), 3:30pm ET on CBS.
As I’m sure you’ve heard over the last week if you’ve watched any sports preview show, it’s been 11 years since the Volunteers have beaten the Gators. Most of the so-called “experts” believe this is Tennessee’s best chance to end the streak.
I’m not buying it.
The Gators’ defense is No. 1 in the country. Yes, their competition to date hasn’t been all that impressive but it’s a very talented group. The Gators are also dow starting quarterback Luke del Rio for a few weeks as well but backup Austin Appleby isn’t a slouch.
There’s a reason why this game opened up as Tennessee favored by 10 but has since slid to under 7-points.
As they say, never bet against a steak.
Keep an eye on: No. 17 Arkansas vs. No. 10 Texas A&M (-6), 9:00pm ET on ESPN.
It seems as if the Arkansas Razorbacks have been looking for that signature SEC win for about five years now under head coach Bret Bielema. This is their shot for another one.
Unlike the Florida-Tennessee matchup profiled above, this game is trending in the other direction. The Texas A&M Aggies opened up as 2-point favorites but that number has since jumped up to 6.
There are a lot of Razorback fans in Dallas so nobody should be treating this as a home game for A&M. Also, the winner of this game will take its spot behind Alabama as the Tide’s biggest challenger in the SEC West.
Who wants it more?
Trending up: Former Purdue quarterbacks.
As discussed above, there are now two former Purdue quarterbacks who will be starting this weekend in pivotal SEC matchups.
Most would say that’s a bad thing but I’ll wait and see on that. Who knows? But for now, all I’ve got to ask is if two former quarterbacks are starting for top-twenty teams in another conference, I don’t care what the reasons are, what’s wrong with Purdue?
Trending down: Vanderbilt.
Last year the Commodores won five games and nearly made a bowl game but this year things have gone from bad to worse. They might just be the worst team the SEC has had in about 10 years.
