NFL Rookie Quarterbacks Report: Winston Looks Like a Winner
NFL Rookie Quarterbacks Report: Winston Looks Like a Winner
The crop of rookie quarterbacks in 2015 may have seemed a little bit thin at first glance at the season’s beginning, even though the first two draft picks play the position. This is probably because the last four or five years have produced a lot of top quality QBs, so the hype surrounding Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota may have been tempered a bit. Neither of them seemed to get folks as excited as they were about Andrew Luck or Cam Newton or even Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater and Derek Carr.
But with only three regular season games left, it appears that the Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers both should excited about the future. Bortles is having a really good sophomore campaign for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and both Winston and Mariota have beaten him head to head. Mariota had an 87 yard touchdown run on the Jaguars in a 42-39 win two weeks ago. That’s the longest TD run by a QB in a long time.
While the Titans haven’t seen their win total climb a lot in Mariota’s rookie season, Winston has Tampa Bay in the playoff race in year one. The Bucs are 6-7 going into Thursday night’s game at the St. Louis Rams. If the Bucs can beat the lowly Rams and then the Bears, the Week 17 game against the Panthers could have a lot of hype surrounding it if the Panthers are still unbeaten.
Winston has over 3000 yards already with 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Any time a rookie has a touchdown for every pick, that’s pretty good. Winston nearly has two. To giver an example Bortles had 11 touchdowns and 17 picks in his rookie season. This year he has improved to 30 touchdowns and 13 picks. Think about Winston improving by that much in his second year.
Mariota is an equally impressive 19 touchdowns with only 10 picks. He has thrown for nearly 2800 yards. His QBR is 91 compared to Winston’s 85. The Titans beat the Bucs in a week one showdown between the two rookies and Mariota had a whale of a game.
None of the other rookie quarterbacks this season have seen any action. But one that I think has an excellent chance at making a good NFL quarterback is Bryce Petty of the New York Jets. He is a tall, big armed QB that the NFL loves. He came out of Baylor where he put up huge numbers and in the preseason he was a nice 27 for 45 with a touchdown and no interceptions. He is one to watch out for in the near future. The Jets will likely be in the position where they will need a new starter soon.

So while the season may not have started with a lot of great expectations for the new quarterbacks, this could turn out to be a very good bunch of new QBs in the future. Year two is normally the critical year for quarterbacks, but these rookie seasons for Mariota and Winston have been highly impressive.
