Arkansas Football 2015 – Better, worse or about the same?

Arkansas RB Alex Collins

ARKANSAS OFFENSE

The consensus coming out of spring is that Arkansas will be much better on offense in 2015.

Fifth-year senior quarterback Brandon Allen had a terrific spring. Bret Bielema said following the spring game that his QB didn’t throw an interception all spring, so all indications point to Allen and the passing game being much stronger next season, which was – if you could point to one thing – the Razorbacks’ weakness in 2014.

Arkansas returns the SEC’s best rushing duo in Jonathan Wiliams (1,190 yards rushing) and Alex Collins (1,100 yards rushing).

The offensive line has also been shifted around, but will be even better than last year if you talk to coaches and the linemen themselves. Denver Kirkland – arguably Arkansas’ top pro prospect on the line – moved from right guard to left tackle this spring, a position offensive line coach Sam Pittman feels he can thrive at. Arkansas will again bring in one of the top, and biggest, lines in the nation week in and week out.

ARKANSAS DEFENSE

The Razorback defense closed out 2014 as one of the top 10 in the country in scoring defense behind leadership from seniors Martrell Spaight and Trey Flowers. I don’t see Arkansas being as good on defense as last season, but I think they can still be a top 25 defense nationally.

Bielema has praised the depth along the line, saying he’s as deep along the front line as he’s been as a head coach, so he won’t be afraid to rotate 8-9 guys along the defensive line.

JaMichael Winston along the defensive line and rising junior linebacker Brooks Ellis will likely be the guys this fall for Robb Smith’s defense. The secondary was also a major improvement last season, and will be a strength again with pass breakups leader Jared Collins returning at corner.

This unit will be tough again in 2015, but it’s hard to say they’ll be as good as last season.

BUYING OR SELLING?

I’m buying Arkansas in 2015. Looking over the schedule, with the talent Bielema has on both sides of the ball, I have Arkansas with 8 wins, and a possibility for 9.

Intriguing matchups with Texas A&M in Arlington and Tennessee in Knoxville will tell us a lot about this team. But with a massive offensive line, a pair of NFL style running backs and a defense as good as Arkansas’, it’s hard not to buy them.

Agreed completely here. Their offense should be really, really good. I’m interested in the defense but this could be a darkhorse in the West. The defense last year was pretty surprising. Their schedule isn’t too friendly, but they should be able to control most of the games their in.
