The SEC’s Top 5 Offenses for 2015

This is the second part to the article I wrote last week for Real Clear Sports in which I discussed the The SEC’s Top 5 Defenses for 2015.

The SEC’s top 5 offenses for 2015

While the SEC has been known as the home of defense in the recent past, the offenses have been catching up, although last season was not a banner year for SEC offenses.

Let’s jump right in and take a look at the best five offenses for 2015….

#5 Alabama Crimson Tide

2014 SEC Ranks
Scoring Offense: 2nd
Rushing Offense: 6th
Passing Offense: 4th
Total Offense: 3rd

In Lane Kiffin’s first year as offensive coordinator, the Tide saw their ypg rise by 30, but their points per game fell by 1.3 as they threw the ball over four additional times per game versus the previous season. They also lost 22 turnovers versus 17 the year before.

Blake Sims did an admirable job at quarterback in his one-year but I think that Jacob Coker, once he earns the job, will do a perfectly fine job holding down the position as the Tide wait for Blake Barnett to develop.

At RB, Derrick Henry is a hoss and with TJ Yeldon leaving this will open the door for him to have an All-SEC caliber year. The problem with Bama at RB right now is not skill but it’s depth as a once deep and rich backfield has become very shallow so injuries are a concern here. If Kenyon Drake can
recover fully, then Henry and Drake give the Tide one of the best 1-2 punches in the country.

The Tide used Amari Cooper as a crutch last year and losing him will hurt, but it will also force Kiffin to open up the playbook and discover that he has one of the best tight ends in the country in OJ Howard. Howard will be a key as the Tide lose their three top receivers from 2014.

Another concern is that Bama returns just two starters on the offensive line, but Alabama has had the #1 recruiting class in the SEC every year from 2012 to 2015, so we should expect them to be able to reload.

Look for Alabama’s offense to rely more heavily on the ground game, especially at the beginning of the year, but we should see a similar product to what they had last year.

[box] Alabama rushed for over 200 yards in three SEC games last year and went 3-0 SU & ATS in those games. The Tide were held to 170 yards or less rushing in 5 games last year and went 3-2 SU, but 1-4 ATS.[/box]

I breakdown my 5 top SEC offenses for 2015 along with some betting nuggets here at Real Clear Sports.
