March Madness 2015 – Overrated and Underrated Teams

With the start of March Madness 2015 only a few days away, I have listed a couple of teams that I feel are overrated, and a couple more that I feel are underrated.

I’ll be making my first round picks over the next few days, so please check the site periodically for updates. They will also be tweeted out. Good luck everyone.

Overrated Teams

Oregon Ducks – Let’s face it, the PAC-12 was a mediocre conference at best with only 4 teams (some think that was generous) making the tournament, so the fact Oregon gave up 70 points per game this year, ranking them 285th in the country is not good.  Fans love offensive teams, but even with their high scoring offense, they were fortunate to make it to the Conference Championship game, needing buzzer beater to advance.  The Ducks have enough offense, but not enough defense to advance very far in the tournament, which sounds eerily familiar to their football team, and we saw what that got them in crunch time 🙂

Maryland– playing this team at home is tough, but get them away from the Xfinity Center and you got a shot.  Don’t get me wrong, losing only 6 games for the entire season in the Big Ten is fantastic for any NCAA team, but look at these numbers.  They were 92nd in the country in efficiency.  Their effective field goal percentage was just 50.9%, ranking them 98th nationally.  Their first round game is against a very good defensive Valpo team that ranked 18th in overall defense.  The Terps better be careful or we could see our first upset of the tournament.

Underrated Teams

Utah – I know I just mocked the PAC-12 for being a weak conference, but Utah has the skill and defense to match-up with almost any team.  The Utes were ranked in the top 10 throughout most of the season and were seconds away from beating Kansas on the road.  Like most underrated teams, it’s their defense that gets over looked, allowing only 56.9 points per game, ranking them 11th in the country.  I would not be surprised to see Utah go deep in this tournament, possibly even beating Duke.

Virginia – Yes … I know they’re a number 2 seed, but they might be the most underrated two seed in over a decade.  Betting against Toney Bennett and his defense will not be a smart choice by bettors.  They are ranked #1 in overall defense, #3 in defensive Field Goal % and #4 in rebounds.  Their best shooter, Justin Anderson is back and they have a very favorable bracket.  If they get to the finals, don’t be surprised if they take Kentucky down to the wire in the Championship game.
