SEC Upset Special: Ole Miss vs. Texas A&M
Last week Ole Miss was the focus of my SEC Upset Special, but this weekend the Rebels are on the opposite side of things. After upsetting the top-ranked Crimson Tide, Ole Miss could lose its No.3 ranking on Saturday.
Inconsistencies in Ole Miss Offense
Ole Miss played outstanding on defense against Alabama, which allowed them to get off to a slow start offensively. No matter how great the Rebels defense is, A&M is the kind of offense that will still get its big plays at some point. I’m a bit concerned with the Rebels’ ability to put up enough points on the road in this game.
They don’t have a great running game–it only averages 143.0 yards per game and ranks 87th in the nation. Bo Wallace isn’t the most consistent quarterback either. He had a great game against Alabama, but playing on the road will present a different challenge. In 2013, Wallace threw for 13 touchdowns and only four interceptions at home, but only five touchdowns and six interceptions in away games.
Texas A&M is not anywhere close to being considered a good defense at this point, but the Aggies can keep Wallace off his game by pressuring him. A&M freshman Myles Garrett has been one of the top pass rushers in the country this season and already has seven sacks on the season.
A&M’s Offense
Like I stated above, A&M’s offense is too good to not get big plays at some point in the game. Even against a Mississippi State defense that only gives up 19.4 points per game, the Aggies came away with 526 total yards.
Kenny Hill leads the nation’s 3rd-best scoring offense and has many talented receivers at his disposal, including Malcome Kennedy, Josh Reyonlds, Ricky Seals-Jones, and Speedy Noil. Ole Miss is very disciplined in the secondary, but at some point this A&M offense and Hill will break through.
Other- Couple of other facts I didn’t know where to put
The biggest factor is that this game is at Texas A&M. Kyle Field, known for the “12th Man” is one of the toughest environments to play in. Last weekend in Starkville, the Aggies didn’t seem to play with any kind of passion. Getting back in front of the home crowd will help Sumlin get his group fired up to play.
It’s also worth noting that Kevin Sumlin is 5-1 after a loss at Texas A&M, including a win on the road against Auburn.
Conclusion
After an emotional win last Saturday, the Rebels will be on the other side of the upset this time around. Texas A&M realizes it still has a lot to play for, and that offense is still very good.
On the road, I don’t see how Ole Miss will be able to score enough points to win this game. They don’t have that ideal balance on offense because of their lack of a running game, and I’m not sure which Bo Wallace we will see in this game either.
Texas A&M 27, Ole Miss 20
Is it an upset when aggy is favored? Not trying to hate, love the analysis, just sayin’.
Keep up the good work.
You make a good point. Even though A&M is favored with the points, some perception may be that it could be a minor upset since Ole Miss is ranked third. And when you start to look at the other SEC games, there’s not much room for upsets this week, so I wanted to write something to remind people that A&M is still very good and that we shouldn’t be completely sold on Ole Miss just yet.
