Bowling Green Football 2013 Spring Wrap Up

Bowling Green Football 2013 Spring Wrap Up

Spring Summary

I would say that it was a Spring where a lot of work went on behind the scenes but the major questions weren’t answered.

For example, Bowling Green needs to replace Chris Jones (MAC Defensive POTY) at D-Tackle, but nearly all the potential replacements were out with injuries.

There are question marks at RB, but there were really only 3 RBs healthy, so that didn’t get answered.  They have a three-way QB competition, but that will continue until the Fall.  And, when looking to see if the WRs come around, we didn’t see anything that really answered that question.

So, I’d say that the questions that were there at the beginning are still there.

Name a few players who could have breakout seasons

The most prominent one is Kendall Montgomery.  He’s 6’5″ and 268 and came to BG from Miami as a TE.  However, he was moved to D-end mid-year last year and played some passing downs as an edge rusher.  He appears to really be taking to the position.  He is a physical beast and could present huge matchup problems for the tackles in the MAC.

David “Chief” Kekuewa is playing C.  He came in as a JUCO player last year and made a real mark.  He has developed into a team leader and appears to be a strong part of a line that is slowly improving.

If you are looking down the list, JUCO WR Jared Cohen might be playing his way onto the two-deep.

Are there any “surprises” we can expect from this team?

Right now, Bowling Green is entering the season as a team that was good last year and has almost everyone back.  I believe that the defense will continue to excel.

The question is whether the offense will surprise us with offensive production, and that has huge question marks.

All-MAC RB Anthon Samuel may or may not return next Fall (family matters in Florida) and there are injury issues and four highly regarded FR coming in for the Fall.

The WRs have to show the ability produce on a down-by-down basis and the QB position is up in the air.

If these things are answered satisfactorily–and Clawson has had some great offensive teams in his career–then this can be a special team.
