2020 SEC Football Pick of the Week – Week Five

Mississippi State Football 2013 Spring Wrap Up

What a weekend!

The first weekend of SEC football was not without drama as Florida and Mississippi State led the way offensively, Auburn and Georgia pulled away in the second half of their respective games and Tennessee and Texas A&M struggled against South Carolina and Vanderbilt respectively.

As for Auburn though, their win 29-13 win against Kentucky covered the spread and we’re 1-0 thanks to that. Their win also pushes us to a 46-31 record since 2015.

We’re back for week five of the season but for the second game of the SEC season.

SEC Pick of the Week: Arkansas at No. 16 Mississippi State (-17), 7:30pm ET on SECN.

I’m pretty sure that this is the first time I’ve picked the Bulldogs in the Pick of the Week. Had the Razorbacks been more competitive in the second half last week against Georgia this pick may have been different but I think reality hits them hard this week.

KJ Costello will probably throw for 500 yards again as #HailState rolls 50-20. My only reservation here is garbage time. I can totally see Arkansas scoring two or three touchdowns when the game no longer matters.

But hey, that’s why they play the games right?

As a Gators fan I remember the questions as to whether or not the spread under Urban Meyer would work in the SEC. The air raid has been here before and has had success (see: Tim Couch and Kentucky) under Mike Leach and this feels like round two.

Bulldogs big over the Razorbacks.

Upset alert: Missouri at No. 21 Tennessee (-11.5), 12:00pm ET on SECN.

I’m not buying the Volunteer hype just yet, especially after needing a miscue on a punt to beat the South Carolina Gamecocks last Saturday.

I think in due time that maybe, just maybe, Jeremy Pruitt will get the Vols rolling but they’ll probably still struggle to consistently beat Alabama, Florida and Georgia in the future.

As for now though, they lack a lot. Quarterback, receiver, defense… take your pick. I’ll wait. An above offensive line and a better-than-average running back in Eric Gray aren’t going to win SEC football games as the season gets tougher.

Keep an eye on: Ole Miss at Kentucky (-6.5), 4:00pm ET on SECN.

Unlike the Vols, I’m hopping on the Lane Train. He’s a borderline genius when it comes to play-calling and Elijah Moore is a heck of a receiver. He’ll find unique ways to get him the ball.

On the other side of things Kentucky continues to be underrated in my book and this year is no different. They’ll probably finish with around a 5-5 record overall but they’ll play like a 8-4 or 9-3 team during a normal season.

Trending up: The Two Kyles and a gang of Pirates.

It’s the dawn of a new day in the SEC. The dawn of what could be the greatest offensive explosion since Steve Spurrier and the Fun N’ Gun.

Florida, led by Kyle Trask (30/42 for 416 yards and 6 touchdowns) and Kyle Pitts (8 catches for 170 yards and 4 touchdowns) set a school record for total offense against an SEC opponent with 642 yards.

While the defense definitely struggled – a result of only having two practices that involved tackling – it won’t matter if they score 50+ points a game. And remember, LSU rode a similar style to the national championship last season.

Mississippi State on the other hand upset LSU behind pirate lord Mike Leach and his air raid offense. Transfer quarterback KJ Costello threw for 623 yards and five touchdowns going 36/60 along the way.

Sixty pass attempts to go against just 15 rushing attempts, hell yeah, sign me up.

Trending down: LSU with a nod to Georgia.

Speaking of LSU, who saw this loss coming? Aside from you know, yours truly. They’ve just lost too much. They’ll probably still go 7-3 for the year but the wheels are beginning to slowly fall off the Coach O show.

Meanwhile down in Athens, is there a quarterback controversy on the horizon? I don’t know, but with the change to Stetson Bennett from D’Wan Mathis that turned a 7-5 halftime deficit to Arkansas (Arkansas!) into a 37-10 win, maybe Kirby Smart has found something.
