Oilers/Maple Leafs:

Looking at this game, I think we all know there is quite a bit of hype.

Even in ignoring all superstar implications and debates in this one, let’s also not forget that the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs are two teams that see their performances amplified. When they are not doing well, everyone loves to rag on them. When they are, all the Hallelujahs are sung…meaning that this game is going to be an emotional one.

While both teams have seen their fair share of hardships already this season, I think the biggest storyline at the moment here are the Toronto Maple Leafs and their current surge. They have won 9 of their last 10 games, and 11 of their last 13 games. Edmonton saw a bit of a fall in December, but have appeared to be going through a momentum shift back into form. In the three games since the embarrassing blowout loss at home versus Calgary on December 27th, the Oilers have not had a regulation loss and are coming off a very impressive 4-1 win in Boston two afternoons ago.

While the Maple Leafs certainly have Edmonton’s number in the McDavid era, I am not looking at history nor team make up in my selection of this game. This is just a play based on a strong feeling that we are in a pivotal window with both of these teams.

I think Edmonton is starting to get the depth the longed for at the start of the season, and the test of resiliency is finally being conquered.
