“Shorestein Says” 2019 NFL Week 7 Pick

Minnesota @ Detroit +1.5: Unsurprisingly, Kirk Cousins has racked up some impressive numbers against some bad defenses.  Atlanta, Oakland, NY Giants, and even Philadelphia have some of the most porous pass defenses in the NFL and Cousins’ shredded them.  However, when he was matched up against better defenses on the road, he looked completely lost.  Here’s a quick summary of his game logs below:

I’ve preached this theory for years, and it appears to have held true for this season as well.

The Lions have shown that they are on the fringe of a top 5 pass defense.  Their numbers continue to improve, and there is clearly some talent in the secondary.  Darius Slay has been elite for years, and I am very impressed with the ball skills of Tracy Walker and Justin Coleman.  The Lions defense has made major improvements in key categories on defense as I pointed at last week.  Detroit’s passing yards allowed per attempt, red zone TD %, takeaways, and passer rating defense all rank near the top of the league.  The Lions have been most vulnerable to the run this year, but I don’t think the Vikings can exploit it if Cousins continues to fold under pressure.

After the heart-breaking loss against the Packers, which was mainly the result of poor officiating, I’d expect to see a fired-up bounce back performance.  The offense continues to shine under Stafford’s downfield passing attack and balanced play-calling.  Kenny Golladay seems unstoppable every time I see him play.  I trust the Lions more as home dogs as they’ve faced a tougher schedule and you could make the case that they should have won every one of those games.  I think they play with a chip on their shoulder and win this important NFC North matchup.
