Panthers/Lightning:

The Battle of Florida will showcase two teams with quite high expectations coming into this 2019-20 season, and it seems as though the Panthers might be primed for a breakout season.

With that being said, there are very obvious reasons as to why the line is set the way that it is.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are coming off a record breaking season, winning nearly 76% of the games they played. Therefore it is very understandable why they are receiving such high favor right from the get go at home. Based on last year’s results as well, there is no reason to believe that Florida even has a chance at winning a game against the Regular Season Champs. The Panthers, despite having so much accumulated talent over the years, just have not been able to crack the case and become a contender.

Fast forward to this season, and Florida now has the coach of the decade in Joel Quenneville and a two time Vezina Winning Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. While it may take some time for the Coach Q system to be well implemented, it is also a coaching style that gets the defense on track right away. The combination of defensive resilience and hard working talent up front is the exact formula to take down the Lightning, as it was proven in last year’s first round of the playoffs.

With Tampa nursing a few key injuries, and being so far deep into Jon Cooper’s soft but skilled approach, I think Florida is going to give them all kinds of trouble today. It may also take some time for Tampa Bay to gel into form. I am going to take a shot at the Southwest Florida squad to get the first notch of the division rivalry this year.

Jets/Rangers:

If anyone were to evaluate a preview of a game between these two teams at any point last season, it would be very obvious as to which team is of higher caliber. In fact, it was not even close. The New York Rangers were not expected to do much in their first year of official rebuild, and finished well out of a playoff spot as anticipated. The Winnipeg Jets were a Central Division Title Contender and entered the Playoffs as a higher seed. Yet coming into this season, the Point total projections between these two teams are only around a five point difference.

I believe there is extreme hype on both sides, and this is what has even led to the Rangers being favored today.

The Rangers offseason acquisitions of second overall pick Kaapo Kakko, Superstar Winger Artemi Panarin, and top pairing puck moving defenseman Jacob Trouba has created an understanding that the New York Rangers will be vastly improved on the second year of their rebuild. On the flip side, the absence/departure of three key blue liners for the Winnipeg Jets has led to the understanding that they won’t be as good this season.

While both may be true in the grand scheme of things, let’s just focus on opening night for these two.

In my opinion, this is a bad line. The overall visions have influenced today’s line setting, and so has the standard Original Six favor that New York is getting as the home team today.

It will take awhile for the Rangers offense to gel with their new additions. As of right now, we have one well developed, molded, and winning formula against a very unproven and uncertain group as a whole.

If this game is going to be played under natural ability, it should not even be a question of who has the edge here. It should be the Jets.
