When looking at just one game and one game only, is there such a thing as a good loss?

Again, just from the standpoint of one game and one game only. I’ll say no. I’d rather win ugly than lose pretty. But…

I’ll tell you one thing: near the end of third-quarter of the Florida-Georgia game on Saturday I witnessed one of the greatest plays, rather series of plays I’ve ever seen.

Just after fumbling on their own 1-yard line the Gators’ defense stopped the Georgia offense on six (six!) straight plays from there to keep Bulldogs from the end zone. It was remarkable.

Now, I’ve seen the Gators pull off some great goalline stands over the years. In the 2009 BCS National Championship Game against Oklahoma the Gators stood tall at the 1-yard line in route to winning the championship 21-14.

Then a few years ago in the canceled but not canceled, LSU Tigers cry fest over a home game because they have no empathy regarding a hurricane, the Gators won the SEC East division by stopping the Tigers on four straight plays.

Karma anyone?

This one against Georgia ranks right up there. Not of importance, obviously, but man it was impressive.

The sad news though, the Gators lost 36-17. Which means we fall to 4-6 on the year. We’re now running out of time to get to the .500 or better for the first time ever.

Week ten…

SEC Pick of the Week: No. 20 Texas A&M at Auburn (-6), 12:00pm ET on ESPN.

For a team that had such high hopes at the beginning of the year (Auburn) going up against a team that nobody really knew what to expect from (Texas A&M) has a script ever flipped so quickly?

The Aggies have played good and bad, and to that extent so have the Tigers, albeit more bad than good – think that one game against LSU.

A&M played Clemson close at the beginning of the year. Auburn, as mentioned above played LSU close earlier too. But since then the Aggies have been the far more consistent team and have played better overall.

By a lot I’d venture to say.

They are were recently ranked in the top-15 and are clearly the third best team in the SEC West. You know, sort of where Auburn was supposed to fit in.

As such, why is Auburn favored here? Because they are at home? Really?

Does Vegas think they’re playing the Vols again? A&M to cover.

SEC Pick of the Week II: No. 6 Georgia (-10) at No. 9 Kentucky, 3:30pm ET on CBS.

I’ll make this short and sweet.

In a bit of a stunner, the Wildcats came back to beat Missouri last week 15-14. Somehow, their dream season continues. But it’s about to come to a halt.

Georgia, clearly the best team in the eastern division, is going to humiliate Kentucky.

Georgia wins. Big.

Upset alert: Missouri at No. 11 Florida (-6), 4:00pm ET on SECN.

I’ve been down this road before.

Missouri visiting The Swamp in a game the Gators must win. Yep. Been there, done that. Same song and dance, same show on a different channel, the list goes on so far I could go on for days.

Be careful Gators.

Keep an eye on: No. 1 Alabama (-14.5) at No. 3 LSU, 8:00pm ET on CBS.

I honestly think that this is the second best rivalry in the SEC behind Florida and Georgia.

The games between these two teams are just fantastic and there have been some epic battles. They remind me a lot of the Florida-Tennessee games throughout the 1990’s.

Anyway though, I expect Alabama to roll here. They are just too good. If they play up to even half of what they are capable of there isn’t a team in the country that can hang with them for an entire game.

But, Baton Rouge at night is weird. I swear it’s voodoo. Or maybe it’s the boudin.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Alabama wins 50-10. But with the way this rivalry has played out the last decade or so, I also wouldn’t be surprised if Alabama wins 21-17 either.

I’m leaning towards a close, low scoring affair like they always are with Alabama winning by just enough to get near covering the spread.

Trending up: Alabama as an all-time great.

I know they had their bye week and everything, but this Alabama team has a chance to be in the discussion for the greatest team of all-time.

As some of you already know, I’m 34 years but based on what I’ve actually seen I’ll say that three programs produced teams in the 1990’s that can be in the discussion: Florida (1995 or 1996), Florida State (1999) and Nebraska (1995).

Following that group was Miami in the early 2000’s. There was legitimately a three year stretch where they just couldn’t be stopped unless it was by an official.

USC then went on a run for a few years with Reggie Bush and company. Texas was awesome for a year way back in 2005 when Vince Young decided to have a great year.

If Alabama can finish this season out, I’d rank them in some order like:

1. Nebraska 1995.

2. Alabama 2018.

3. Florida 1995 or 1996.

4. Miami 2001.

5. USC 2004.

Nebraska is No. 1 for sure but after that it’s bunched up pretty tightly. You can order a few teams however you like and I wouldn’t really argue just as long as the teams are there.

Trending down: Cocktails and dreams.

Bonus points for you if you can get the reference there.

Anyway, for the second straight year and for the fifth time in the last eight the Gators leave Jacksonville beaten down.

But hey, Georgia is good and the Gators will be back. We’re still have a great year and I’m proud (and happy) with the way the season has gone thus far. But the dream of shocking the world is over.
