2015 SEC Pick of the Week – Week Eight
Now we’re rolling. With Mississippi State’s cover of the spread over Louisiana Tech last week, we improved to 4-3 on the year in our SEC Picks of the Week.
Truth be told though, I’m not enamored by any of the matchups this week. Maybe it’s because the Florida Gators are off, or maybe it’s because I just really want Alabama to beat Tennessee so bad that I’m losing my focus.
I honestly don’t know which it is, but here goes nothing:
SEC Pick of the Week: No. 5 LSU (-16) vs. Western Kentucky, 7:00pm ET ESPNU.
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t really know all that much about the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers this season. I know they beat Vanderbilt to begin the season and that they’re usually a pretty solid C-USA team.
So far this year they’re 6-1 overall, 4-0 C-USA, with their only loss coming on the road at Indiana by three points. They also appear to have a pretty good offense.
In their last four games against Miami of Ohio, Rice, Middle Tennessee and North Texas they’re averaging 54.5 points. The Hilltoppers have one of the best passing attacks in the country. But, they aren’t a complete football team and beating Rice and North Texas isn’t anything to write home about.
They’ve struggled on defense throughout the year and that isn’t a good thing with LSU’s Leonard Fournette coming up next.
Through six games, Leonard Fournette has 1,202 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he rushes for roughly 200 yards and two touchdowns against the Hilltopper defense.
I also don’t think this game will be all that close. LSU’s defense is too good. They’ll shut down that passing attack, Fournette will run wild and LSU will cover the slightly over two touchdown spread.
Upset Alert: No. 24 Ole Miss (-6) vs. No. 15 Texas A&M, 7:00pm ET ESPN.
Why is Ole Miss favored in this game? It can’t be just because it’s at home, right? Okay. Just checking.
Nope. Still doesn’t make sense. Don’t get me wrong though, I can see this game being close. And Ole Miss definitely has a chance at winning it. But I certainly don’t think they should be favored.
I don’t understand this one at all, so I’m staying away from it. Unless of course you’re certain that the Aggies can pull this off – I’m somewhere in the 75% range. Iguess injuries to some linebackers and a bad performance last week by quarterback Kyle Allen is enough to swing the tide.
I just don’t see it. I’ll take Texas A&M.
Keep an eye on: Auburn at Arkansas, 12:00pm ET SECN.
The Razorbacks have six games remaining and they’ve got to win four of them to make it to a bowl game. Do you want to know the most underrated aspect of making it to a bowl game? It’s the extra month of allowable practices.
Arkansas must win this game. They’ve got to win four out of Auburn, UT-Martin, Ole Miss, LSU, Mississippi State and Missouri.
I’m not sure they can, but four of them are at home. Beginning this Saturday with Auburn. And the Razorbacks are a team that needs those extra practices.
Trending Up: LSU’s (and the SEC’s) College Football Playoff aspirations.
I still think the SEC West will come down to Alabama and LSU. The winner of that game will probably end up winning the SEC and making it to the college football playoffs.
As of now though, I’ll give the edge to LSU. They’re undefeated, have the best player in college football on their team and are paying very well.
But let’s just say that Alabama wins that game and wins out. Well, then Alabama goes to the playoffs. Same goes for Ole Miss. If they win the rest of their games and the SEC – they’ve got the tiebreaker against Alabama – they’ll be in the playoffs then.
The SEC will have a team in the college football playoff. If, and (almost) only if, the conference champion comes from the west division. Lone exception: the Gators. But they better be 12-1 after the first weekend in December.
Trending Down: The bottom of the SEC East and West.
As of now, I think 11 of the 14 teams in the SEC can and probably will make a bowl game. We’re halfway through the season and I’ve got Auburn, South Carolina and Vanderbilt missing out.
Wait, throw Arkansas in that group as well. That’ll make ten teams. You know what, actually yeah, give Auburn that 6th win. We’re back to eleven.
So, I think Arkansas is out. Maybe. We’ll see in two weeks. Yeah, give me two more weeks.
Man, the bottom two or three teams in each division sure are terrible.
