Indiana Football 2015 – Better, worse or about the same?

INDIANA OFFENSE
Some parts of the offense will be better and others will be worse, so overall I think it will be the same.
Of course, the Hoosiers lost 2,000-yard running back Tevin Coleman to the pros, so not having him will be a detriment to the offense. Coming in to replace Coleman is UAB transfer Jordan Howard, who had a strong season last year but will be hard-pressed to match the production that Coleman brought to the team.
That being said, Indiana will also get Nate Sudfeld back as QB, after losing him to a separated shoulder halfway through the season. If Sudfeld can stay healthy a full season, I think he’s a top-5 QB in the B1G – otherwise it could be Zander Diamont’s turn again.
The receiving corps is still young, and their most reliable weapon, Shane Wynn, graduated last year. IU’s wideouts, such as Simmie Cobbs and J-Shon Harris, need to become more reliable at catching the ball as well.
The offensive line has an NFL-caliber player in Jason Spriggs, but will need to show more consistency throughout the season.
INDIANA DEFENSE
Indiana’s defense has always been a work in progress under Kevin Wilson, but it began to show signs of life last season under a new defensive coordinator in Brian Knorr.
The question with IU’s defense is – can they put a full game together? I only saw that a few times last season, and usually there was a significant dropoff in how the IU defense played during the second and fourth quarters of games.
One player to watch out for is Tegray Scales, a jack-of-all-trades defensive end who could have a breakout sophomore season.
The Hoosiers seem set at safety with Chase Dutra and Antonio Allen, but cornerbacks are still a question mark.
The defense will never be the main attraction at Indiana under Wilson, but if the overall unit can continue to improve and do a better job at keeping opponents’ offenses off the field, then the defense will already be a step ahead of what it has been for the past few years.
BUY OR SELL?
Vegas has put the over/under at 6 wins for Indiana this season, and I think this is a fair number.
Winning all four of their non-conference games is easier said than done, but if the Hoosiers can do it, they’ll start the season 4-0. The non-con opponent I see giving them the most trouble is Western Kentucky.
The B1G East schedule will be a grind; however, they have winnable games against B1G West opponents Purdue and Iowa. So I’ll say the Hoosiers win their first four, win at home against either Iowa or Rutgers, and with a bowl game on the line, beat Purdue to win their third straight Old Oaken Bucket game to finish 6-6.
