ACC QB Breakdown: How This Affects Betting in 2015

The ACC is loaded with quarterback potential this season, as the conference welcomes back 10 starters from last year. Despite losing Jameis Winston, some may be underestimating how good this ACC crop could be.

So how exactly will this affect how you bet on ACC teams this year? Let’s take a look at some factors to consider this fall from a handicapping perspective.

Experience

Like I stated earlier, the ACC returns 10 starters at the quarterback position. This is especially important for teams that return young signal callers. Deshaun Watson (Clemson), Brad Kaaya (Miami), and John Wolford (Wake Forest) are all sophomores that will benefit from being thrown into the fire last year.

Jacoby Brissett (N.C. State) and Michael Brewer (Virginia Tech) were transfers to their respective schools last season, so having another offseason to work in that system should pay dividends as well.

Experience is undoubtedly an important thing to have, but the potential of these young quarterbacks is the bigger storyline.

Youth Movement

We can talk about experience all day long, but the upside of the ACC quarterbacks is what makes betting on these teams attractive. Watson is a legitimate Heisman contender, and the ceiling is still very high for Kaaya as well.

Justin Thomas (Georgia Tech), still just a rising junior, has the potential to have a huge season because of the momentum gained in that Orange Bowl victory over Mississippi State.

Offensive Systems

If you take a look at the coaches within the ACC, you will find a number of offensive gurus. David Cutcliffe of Duke has a great reputation of developing quarterbacks (Peyton & Eli Manning come to mind), so it makes the transition to a new starter much easier. The same goes for Florida State.

Jimbo Fisher’s pro-style offense suits new quarterbacks well, because the running game will take away some of that pressure. Clemson promoted two assistants from within to take over offensive coordinator duties, so the system doesn’t change. Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott spent years studying under Chad Morris, so don’t expect much of a drop-off there.

Tyler Murphy worked well in Steve Addazio’s system last season at Boston College, and projected starter Darius Wade possesses similar traits to Murphy. It’s also worth noting that Bobby Petrino has a good track record with quarterbacks, so watch out for Louisville’s offense this season as they return a few guys with starting QB experience there.
