March Madness Day 3 – March 21, 2015

Round 1 of March Madness was insane! Two 14-seeds advanced to the Round of 32, every game seemed to be decided in the last few minutes, and my dark horse Final Four team Michigan State escaped a close game. However, we’ve got more great games on tap today and it’s time to get back to work.

Tournament Record: 4-4

Utah (-4.5) vs. Georgetown: The Utes looked pretty impressive defensively against a very talented Stephen F. Austin offense. They held the Lumberjacks to 50 points and freshman big man Jakob Poeltl had a very impressive performance. Georgetown also looked pretty solid against Eastern Washington, with some excellent three-point shooting from their guards and impressive play from their freshman. With that said, they will have a much more difficult time trying to get into a rhythm against a very tough Utah defense. Josh Smith was not really a factor against an undersized Eastern Washington team, somewhat do to foul trouble and also due to the impressive play of Bradley Hayes, who had by far his best performance of the season. However, as I wrote before the tournament began, this is a very overrated Georgetown team that I don’t have going very far in the tournament. Expect the Utes to use their three point shooters effectively and work the ball inside out with Poeltl to keep the Georgetown defense honest.  I expect the game to be somewhat close, but Delon Wright is a fantastic free throw shooter, especially in late game situations, and I think that he will help keep the Hoyas from covering a relatively small spread in this one.

North Carolina (-5) vs Arkansas: Both of these teams faced challenges in their first round match ups, winning by a combined total of 5 points. UNC had built a pretty large lead against Harvard before nearly giving it away in what ended up as a 67-65 victory that kept Roy Williams undefeated in the first round of the NCAA tournament. That said, I think UNC is a much better team than Arkansas, and Roy Williams seems to always get his teams deep into the tournament. They have a lot more size than Arkansas, with Kennedy Meeks and Brice Johnson inside, and they have been shooting the ball better in recent games. J.P. Tokoto is a dynamic player and a fantastic defender and I believe that he will be the X-factor tonight in this game as he can pass the ball and get out on the fast break to wear down a Razorback team that is not too deep. Marcus Paige hits his free throws, and I always like to count on a team that has a guy that can knock them down late in the games to help get a cover or maintain a lead, and he always tends to perform well in the clutch on a big stage. If they can rebound the ball as they’ve done all season, I believe the Tarheels will win this one and even have a chance to knock off Wisconsin if the Badgers can get past Oregon.
