College Football Recruiting 2015

National signing day is tomorrow, so it is coming down to crunch time for several big-time recruits. The latest article I read was by Fox Sports senior college football reporter Bruce Feldman

Feldman names his Top 10 Instant Impact Recruits, including two, maybe three, from the PAC 12.

His number one overall impact recruit is CB Iman Marshal, who is uncommitted, but all indications are he will sign with USC tomorrow.

He’ll join Su’a Cravens and Adoree’ Jackson in what will be a star-studded USC secondary. The Trojan pass D finished 8th in the PAC 12 last year, allowing 274.5 passing yards per game, but they finished second behind only Stanford in defensive pass efficiency and they tied Arizona State with a league high 14 ints.

[box] 1. Iman Marshall, CB, Uncommitted: A big corner from Southern California prep powerhouse Long Beach Poly, college coaches say he’s every bit as special as his 5-star hype. In fact, I spoke to six college coaches in the past week about the player they saw with the best chance to make a big impact in 2015 and Marshall’s name came up the most. “He’s a legit 6-2 and he’s really long, but also has great change of direction and great hips,” says one veteran West Coast recruiter. “He is just so big and physical,” said another coach. “He can be a big-time corner or he’ll be a big-time safety depending on what his team wants to do with him.” The hunch here is that Marshall stays local and goes to USC, but Michigan, LSU, FSU, Notre Dame and Oregon all have been battling for him.[/box]

Number 5 on Feldman’s list is QB Josh Rosen of UCLA. He is the number 1 QB prospect in the country, and obviously with the loss of Brett Hundley, QB is UCLA’s biggest concern on offense next year.

In fact QB is UCLA’s only concern on offense next year as the Bruins return starters at every other offensive position.

The Bruins also return 16 of their top 20 tacklers, so they should be improved on the defensive side of the ball. After last year’s “disappointing” season, based on all the pre-season hype, expectations will be not be as high this up-coming season.

I look for the Bruins to surprise in 2015.

[box] 5. Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA: The Bruins bring every starter back on offense — except one, quarterback Brett Hundley. For Rosen — a bright, strong-armed 6-4, 210-pounder — the timing is ideal. He was the nation’s No. 1 QB prospect and is already enrolled at UCLA, and I’m told has impressed teammates and staff with the way he’s fit in. Talent-wise, Rosen is very, very impressive. One former college coach told me in my book The QB that when he watched Rosen play he thought this is what Troy Aikman probably looked like in high school. To take over Hundley’s old job, Rosen must beat out Jerry Neuheisel and Asiantii Woulard. With an off-season to get more acclimated to the Bruins and their offense, that figures to happen sooner than later.[/box]

But in order for UCLA to surprise next season and actually wn the PAC 12, they’ll have to find a way to knock off the team that kept them out of the PAC 12 Championship game last year, the Stanford Cardinal.

Which brings us to Feldman’s number 10 player, WR Trent Irwin. With Stanford losing their top receiver Ty Montgomery, Irwin figures to step right in and contribute immediately.

The Cardinal return Cajuste (#2 in reception yards last year) and Hooper (2nd in receptions 2014), so QB Hogan should once again have a nice group to play catch with.

Add that to a more experienced and talented OL and Stanford may be back on top of the PAC 12 North this coming season.

[box] 10 (tie) Trent Irwin, WR, Stanford: Anyone who has seen the Southern Californian in person — either in camps or in games — knows how smooth the 6-2 wideout is. He’s often lined up against standout corners and found ways to beat them, showing good speed and superb route running skills. In high school, against strong competition, Irwin had over 5,000 career receiving yards and scored 57 TDs. With the Cardinal losing leading receiver Ty Montgomery to the NFL, Irwin has a good opportunity to provide a big jolt to the Stanford offense in 2015 and help take some pressure off fellow receiver Devon Cajuste.[/box]
