Last week in our series of Conference Conversations we covered the Big 12. It seems only appropriate that this week we move on to the ACC. Today we start with the first of five Q & A sessions discussing ACC football.
Fair criticism, calling Wake Forest’s program a non-entity (especially since Grobe is 6-5 overall vs my Wolfpack and always seems to give me an ulcer leading up to the game) at this point was harsh. A better way to classify them is that I see it as a program with an inherently limited upside.
I was a big backer of Wake Forest last season ATS as expectations were too low considering their returning talent and system (pretty similar to how I feel about Maryland in ’12, actually), but in my opinion 6-7 wins is about the ceiling for this program in years when the conference is strong.
Grobe has developed a great mentality for Wake, using his recruiting disadvantage to find undersized guys with the right mentality who can redshirt to try and catch up to the naturally stronger and faster FSUs and Clemson’s of the ACC. I just think as Swinney and Fisher continue to stockpile talent it gets tougher to see the Deacs ambush approach provide the kind of consistent success needed to compete yearly (unless those programs never turn the corner).
Everyone seems to worry about UNC not being eligible this year and forgets the fact that a loss is a loss. An FSU loss to UNC an maybe an upset on the road somewhere would knock them out of national title contention and perhaps even ACC title contention based on maybe tie breakers. Just because UNC is on probation doesn’t mean they are going to roll over and die for everyone. Expect a battle. And I think they may have an attitude this year.
Just a thought.
Wake was a missed FG away from playing in Charlotte last year. How in the world are they a “non-entity at this point”?
