Heisman Trophy Betting Update
As the 2014 college football regular season approaches the midway mark, the Heisman Trophy betting picture is far from clear.
It has been a rough year for Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston. After leading the Seminoles to the national championship last season and earning Heisman trophy honors for his efforts, Winston opened the current campaign as an 11/2 favorite to be the first player to win back-to-back Heismans since Archie Griffin accomplished the feat in 1975.
But despite their top ranking in the AP Top 25 poll and perfect 5-0 record entering their Week 7 matchup against Syracuse, the Seminoles have struggled. The team is 1-5 ATS in their last six, dating back to their slim 34-31 win over Auburn in the national championship game.
Compounding an already worrisome situation has been the behavior of Winston, who sat out the team’s 23-17 overtime win over Clemson, suspended by the team after loudly and repeatedly uttering a vulgarity at the school’s student union.
Winston’s suspension comes on the heels of accusations of sexual assault last year and of theft from a local grocery store this past spring.
The result has been a downward spiral in Winston’s Heisman Trophy betting odds, which now sit well back of the pack at 22/1.
Currently leading the way in Heisman Trophy betting is Georgia RB Todd Gurley, pegged as 7/4 favorite entering Week 7 action. Oregon Ducks QB Marcus Mariota is 15/2 and has been a standout in the early going, tossing 15 TDs against zero picks and 1135 passing yards in Oregon’s first five games.
But despite solid numbers, Mariota was unable to lead the Ducks past the Arizona Wildcats, who posted a stunning 31-24 upset win over Oregon in Week 6 action. The loss will undoubtedly oust the Ducks from their No. 2 spot in the AP Top 25 and casts doubt on their chances of reaching the College Football Playoff, which will inevitably impact Mariota’s odds.
Georgia Bulldogs RB Todd Gurley currently leads Mariota in Heisman Trophy betting odds. Gurley has been dominant in the first third of the season, averaging 154.6 rushing yards per game while running for eight TDs; stats that are even more astounding considering Gurley was limited to just six carries in the Bulldogs’ blowout win against the Troy Trojans.
After opening the season considered as Heisman Trophy longshots, Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah and Texas A&M QB Kenny Hill have emerged as strong Heisman Trophy bets, with odds of 9/1 and 10/1, respectively.
Abdullah, who has run for ten TDs and 878 yards through six games and lead Nebraska to a 5-1 start, after amassing 1690 rushing yards, the fourth highest total in Cornhusker history, last season. But despite Abdullah’s heroics, the Cornhuskers have tumbled to a distant 40/1 in college football betting.
Hill raised eyebrows when he won the job as Aggies starting QB over freshman Kyle Allen, who was widely expected to take over the role from Johnny Manziel, who departed for the NFL.
But in his first game as starter, Hill smashed Manziel’s single-game passing yards record with a 511-yard performance in Texas A&M’s 52-28 upset win over South Carolina, and has thrown for 1745 yards and 17 TDs to lead the Aggies to a surprising 5-1 start.
