2014 SEC Power Rankings – Week Six

SEC East
1. Georgia (3-1, 1-1 SEC) – The Bulldogs are the No. 1 team in the East for now, despite a close win against the Tennessee Volunteers. They’ve got serious questions on defense, but they’re still the best the East has to offer for now. Todd Gurley is the real deal.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th against Vanderbilt.
2. Missouri (4-1, 1-0 SEC) – The Tigers went to Columbia, South Carolina and came away with a last minute win. Despite losing to Indiana (which is as embarrassing as it gets), the Tigers might just be alright this year. They’re off this weekend but Georgia looms.
Next game: Saturday, October 11th against Georgia.
3. South Carolina (3-2, 2-2 SEC) – A crushing loss to Missouri last weekend pretty much eliminated the Gamecocks from playoff contention. This was supposed to be Steve Spurrier’s best team at Carolina. What happened? They should get back on track this weekend though.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th at Kentucky.
4. Tennessee (2-2, 0-1 SEC) – The Volunteers are improving by the quarter it seems. Despite coming up short down in Athens, they’ve got confidence. A confident Volunteer team is a dangerous team. They’ve also got a great shot at ending a nine-year losing streak to the Gators on Saturday.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th against Florida.
5. Florida (2-1, 1-1 SEC) – If there is a team that is more of a mess than South Carolina, the Gators appear to be it. The coach and quarterback are under the heat and a win in Knoxville should quiet the masses. A loss? Get your pitchforks ready.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th at Tennessee.
6. Kentucky (3-1, 1-1 SEC) – A win over Vanderbilt has Kentucky halfway to bowl eligibility. They face a tough test this weekend though, as they get South Carolina in Lexington. They’re still the underdogs despite playing better, having the better record and playing at home.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th at South Carolina.
7. Vanderbilt (1-4, 0-3 SEC) – The Commodores loss at Kentucky pretty much sealed their fate this year. They’ll look to play the spoiler for the rest of the year, but I’m not so sure they can even do that. They’re sure to lose this weekend as well.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th at Georgia.
SEC West
1. Alabama (4-0, 1-0 SEC) – The Crimson Tide were off last weekend, but they’re back in action this Saturday as they face an Ole Miss team looking to shock the world. Blake Sims is the man in Tuscaloosa but can he keep things going at The Grove? Alabama better be on upset alert.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th at Ole Miss.
2. Texas A&M (5-0, 2-0 SEC) – It was nice of the Aggies to show up last Saturday in the 4th quarter and finally play like the team that we all know they can be. An overtime win against the Arkansas Razorbacks in Dallas showed resolve. They’re going to need it this weekend too.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th at Mississippi State.
3. Auburn (4-0, 1-0 SEC) – They handled Louisiana Tech like they were expected too, but LSU is up next. The Tigers will play seven of their remaining eight games against teams that they could easily lose. Auburn’s here for the moment, but they could drop quickly.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th against LSU.
4. Ole Miss (4-0, 1-0 SEC) – Some people thought that Memphis had a chance last weekend because the Rebels could possibly be caught looking ahead to this Saturday. Well, the Rebels survived and now they’ll play their most important game in over a decade.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th against Alabama.
5. Mississippi State (4-0, 1-0 SEC) – The Bulldogs are a much better team than I thought they were at the beginning of the season and aside from Missouri’s win over South Carolina, they’ve got the best SEC win on the year. They could move all the way up to No. 2 with a win on Saturday.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th against Texas A&M.
6. LSU (4-1, 0-1 SEC) – The Tigers took out their frustration on New Mexico State last weekend and they’re looking to get their season back this weekend against Auburn. An upset in this one wouldn’t surprise me at all.
Next game: Saturday, October 4th at Auburn.
7. Arkansas (3-2, 0-2 SEC) – The Razorbacks lost a game they probably should have won to Texas A&M last weekend. They get this week off to focus on Alabama but the sting of that loss could linger for a bit. I still don’t think the Razorbacks are that bad of a team.
Next game: Saturday, October 11th against Alabama.
