D’haquille Williams Shows Off Heisman Qualities
At the beginning of the year, all of the Heisman talk from an Auburn angle was centered around quarterback Nick Marshall. He was able to have a very successful season in 2013, and he is going to be a huge part of the offense this year as well. However, we might just be one game into the regular season, but wide receiver D’haquille Williams has all the potential in the world to be a true superstar in 2014. In fact, despite being a wide receiver, he could actually get more Heisman hype surrounding him that his quarterback.
Auburn had a pretty easy start of the regular season, as they were able to dominate Arkansas in the SEC opener to start off the year. Williams was magnificent, as he brought in 9 passes for 154 yards. He was able to find the endzone once, and he will certainly need to find it a lot more if he wants to be a legitimate Heisman contender.
The one thing that always stands in the way for a wide receiver when it comes to a shot at the Heisman is that somebody has to throw the ball. After all, if Nick Marshall is completing a lot of passes to Williams, wouldn’t that mean the quarterback has great numbers? However, it is hard to argue with the fact that Williams has the ability to make everyone better on the field. Just his presence makes the defense very worried about everything. That can open up holes for the rest of the offense.
Williams is still pretty raw, but he has shown that he has a unique ability of creating offense after the catch. That will certainly distance himself from Marshall, since he is turning into basically a running back after bringing in the past. If he is able to have a few memorable runs, he could work his way into the conversation. Auburn probably thought that they had no chance of having 2 Heisman hopefuls, but Williams is quickly showing that he is perhaps the most dangerous weapon in the SEC. If he keeps progressing, it is only a matter of time before he starts contributing in fantasy football on Sundays.
