Utah State Football 2014 Spring Wrap Up

Utah State Football 2014 Spring Wrap Up

Spring summary

My first two thoughts are that the defense is going to be as good or better than last year, and the offense is pretty evenly matched against the defense.

Coming off a loss in the Mountain West championship game and a win in the Poinsettia Bowl, the Aggies are hoping to continue a defensive dominance — ranked No. 7 for points against with 17.1 per game — and looking to improve on their 9-5 record.

Potential breakout players

As a group, the linebackers are the best position on either side of the field. Watch for tough, run-stopping tackles from Kyler Fackrell and Zach Vigil to energize the defense.

I expect safety Devin Centers to turn heads this season. The Arizona native had four tackles, and interception and a forced fumble in the spring game. Centers blocked punts against BYU and Boise State last season.

Position groups

QB: A- … Garretson showed last season he’ll be fine under center if Keeton’s isn’t completely healthy.

RB: B

WR: C+

OL: B- … All new group looks to be more athletic than last year

DL: B

LB: A … This group is talented and deep.

DB: B

Spring conclusion

Just like the last few seasons, the Aggies will have to build up a solid win streak in conference play if they want a decent bowl game. The Mountain division may come down to the final game at Boise State.
