The Oklahoma Sooners 2012 Season Outlook

This will be an interesting year to say the least for not only the Oklahoma Sooners, but the Big 12 in general. The good news for OU is the Stoops brothers are back together again after almost a decade apart. Landry Jones deciding not to declare for the NFL draft, and come back to play his senior season was also good news.

GS, what is the word out of Norman about Troy Metoyer? I have been reading a lot of good things about him. Stills had a pretty good freshman year. Is Metoyer a similar talent?

Pez…I’m very high on Metoyer. I think he’s going to eventually be a monster at the WR position. He looked like a man among boys in highschool. https://youtu.be/lfx0VqOza0g We just have to keep in mind that in order to be a breakout player, you need to have a significant amount of playing time. If OU plays the amount of 3 WR sets they played last year, then he might see plenty of action. But you’re never 100% sure how well a freshman is going to adjust to this level of football. That’s why I’m reserving judgement until I actually see him perform on the field. But I’ll give him credt, he did look very good in the spring.

The player that I think will be the breakout player for OU isn’t even on the depth chart yet. It’s JUCO transfer WR Courtney Gardner. Arkansas had this kid all but signed back in January, and OU came in and snatched him up at the last minute. Gardner is a tremendous player, and a good get for OU. He’s bigger and taller than Meteyor. And being a JUCO he should be able to come right in and bang with the best. https://youtu.be/tPYfjUFdtVs I think he’ll make a big impact right away for the Sooners. But I don’t think he’s going to be on the campus until June. So nobody has really seen him. But from all indications that I’m getting, he’s going to be a huge surprise. This gives me hope for the OU offense. If Stoops hadn’t stolen Gardner from Arky, I believe we would be in real trouble at the WR position. Especially if any of the starters go down.

I look for OU to be playing in Miami, Fla on Jan 7th, 2013. Defense will surprise alot people with Mike Stoops as d.c. Offense will still score points in the 40’s with QB Jones and three good receivers with Juco Gardner a surprise fit. There will be several close games, but an undefeated season will be had and the end of the SEC streak of national championships.

Pacer17…Thanks for coming by and leaving your comment. I just heard some breaking news today that OU picked up another JUCO WR for this season. LaColton Bester, a 6-3 205 pound receiver out of Mississippi. So that’s great news for the Sooners. It looks like to me that Stoops is adding on some emergency depth at the position. That also tells me that it’s very unlikely that those 4 suspended players will be back this season. By the way, I don’t think this kid is there to just fill in. He can play. Here’s some film of him. https://youtu.be/i-TE_IsiEGc

I agree with you that Gardner will be the surprise fit. The main reason being that with the dangerous Stills in the slot, it leaves the very fast and athletic Gardner open for the long ball. I think these two will be a good tandem at the WR positions. Where Meteyor will fit in is still a little unclear. OU runs a lot of 3 WR sets. Meteyor looks to me like he’s one of those 5 yards out to mid range WR’s that as you saw from the film, will be very dangerous AFTER he catches the ball. I’ll also be curious to see if Bob uses him on special teams like they did in highschool. With the WR depth, he may decide not to this year. But this kid does have some unbelievable moves.

It’s just a matter of it all coming together. I’m crossing my fingers because the one thing OU cannot afford this year is injuries. There is some talent behind the starters, but there isn’t much experience. If OU stays healthy, with a little luck they might be able to get to Miami. The good news is the Big 12 doesn’t usually go more than a couple years before making it to the BCS title game. So we are due. Now winning it is another story.
