Utah State Football 2013 Spring Wrap Up

Spring summary

I think the biggest takeaway is that things aren’t all that much different under new head coach Matt Wells. Both sides of the ball looked pretty good in practices, but the defense appears to be even better than last year.

Quarterback Chuckie Keeton remarked that he thought the defense did a better job than last year disguising its looks and bringing pressure from different angles. The Aggies only allowed 15.4 points per game last year (7th in the country). If they are better than that it will be something to see.

Potential breakout players

USU has turned into a factory for running backs the last few years and I’d expect Joe Hill to continue in that tradition. Hill has the speed to take any play to the house.

On defense Devonte Glover-Wright looked good stepping in for Will Davis at cornerback. Glover-Wright played some safety last year in addition to being the backup/wildcat QB. He has all the athletic tools to be an excellent corner.

Positional groups

QB- B+ … Depth is a concern behind Keeton.

RB- B

WR-C … Lots of question marks as the Aggies try and break in a whole new group.

OL-A- … The first team O-line all returns this year. Depth behind them is questionable.

DL-B

LB-A …The strength of the team lies at the LB position. Group is excellent on first team and deep enough to survive an injury or two should they occur.

CB-B

S-B

Spring conclusion

The front half of the Aggies schedule is brutal, but the team should compete with Boise State for the Mountain division title in their first year in the Mountain West.
