South Carolina Football 2013 Spring Wrap Up
South Carolina Football 2013 Spring Wrap Up.
Spring Summary
One major positive coming out of the spring was the overall solid play of the offense, even with a few key players such as Connor Shaw and Damiere Byrd out with injury. In particular, South Carolina is looking good at runningback despite the loss of All-American Marcus Lattimore.
Both Mike Davis and Brandon Wilds had excellent springs. Davis looks to be the starter as of right now and has that extra bit of quickness and field vision that could make him an All-SEC caliber back, but Wilds should get plenty of carries in what will likely be a platoon system.
Offensive line play also projects to be improved.
Name a few players who could have breakout seasons
I’ll go with TE Jerrell Adams. Adams didn’t get a lot of snaps last year behind Justice Cunningham and Rory “Busta” Anderson, but when he got in the game, he made some big catches. He’s a big target who runs routes and catches the ball like a WR.
With Cunningham gone and Carolina looking to sport a two-TE pistol look as part of its base of formations, look for Adams to get more targets this fall. He had some big catches in the spring game and looks capable of becoming one of the nation’s best pass-catching TEs.
Position group grades
QB–B+ Carolina has two excellent options with Shaw and Thompson. However, neither of these guys is in the A-range, meaning an elite QB.
RB–A- I’m very optimistic about this duo. Davis looks like an elite back in the making, and Wilds has the potential to be an NFL backup.
WR–B+ I’m including the TEs here, which are A quality. The wideouts, though, are a question mark. Carolina is hoping that Shaq Roland and/or Shamier Jeffery step up big in the fall. Bruce Ellington, Damiere Byrd, and Nick Jones are all good players, too, particularly Ellington, but they need Roland or Jeffery to serve as a bigger target.
OL–B+ Good group that has the chance to become elite if a couple of starters reach their potential and the depth comes through if there are injuries.
DL–A+ This group is strong at every position and has depth, and it likely has the nation’s best overall defender in Clowney.
LB–C Big question mark for the team. Talent is there but no one has major game experience. Got eaten alive by the TEs in the spring game.
CB–B One very good corner in Victor Hampton and an experienced counterpart for him in Jimmy Legree. Safety play may depend on whether T.J. Gurley is able to return to full speed from his injury quickly.
ST–C Main flaw right now appears to be poor kickoff units. The kickers struggle to get it into the end zone and coverage is spotty.
What “surprises” can we expect from this team?
I think this team is about what people think it is. Compared to last year, the offense should be better, but the defense may not be as good due to the departure of the entire two deep at LB.
However, the schedule this season is easier than last year, meaning that there’s a good opportunity to not only match but exceed last year’s eleven wins. The game at UGA in week two is key, of course. If the Gamecocks win that one, they will likely be favored in all of their remaining regular-season games, although obviously Florida will be tough, as might the road game against Tennessee.
An undefeated regular season will be a distinct possibility. The SEC Championship against Alabama, LSU, or TAMU will obviously be tough, but if you get there and can figure out a way to win, you have a shot at the national championship. Not saying that’s likely for Carolina, but the schedule sets up nicely for the possibility.

Well, it’s just in front of August’s final preparations for the 2013 season: Have you heard how Shaq Roland is catching on with respect to his opportunity to be a main target ? What about the punt return void left by Ace Sanders’ departure–what are the chances a Pharoah Cooper is given that role ?
I believe the Gamecocks are going to struggle a little on offense this year and they’ll definitely miss Ace Sanders in the punt return game. He was a playmaker.
@Pergordo: Thanks for the response. Although, as the spring
game and some other sites predict:
I think Mike Davis’s improved size/speed AND blocking skills along with 4/5 of the line so much improved on the run-block-ing, AND one site saying :”the best tight-end pair in college football” And Spurrier’s proven ability to adapt (look at all the times Lattimore got hurt–and still TWO unprecendented 11-win seasons ? No, I think Carolina is going to be an Offense to be reckoned with. Brandon Wilds I just read somebody ELSE say yesterday “Good NFL backup Running back”. One OTHER site puts the offense of Carolina this year, “possibly beyond Georgia’s AND Alabama’s”. Even if he’s slightly off, I’m believing for a good, creative offense under Spurrier’s good home-style and adaptive cooking.
If we can get the talented young Larenz Bryant (“best linebacker in side to side motion in college”}and others up to speed enough to get by early,I’ll have faith that”the best front four in college football”–along w/the disruptive force par excellence called “Clowney” avails much !

Wilds won’t ever even see an NFL training camp…and i will make that bet today with anyone…have you seen him play? Take out his game vs The Citadel and his career ypc is 4.2 and his career long run is 24 yds!!! Who is foolish enough to declare that NFL caliber talent..??
Last yera UGA was #1 in yards/play and get EVERYBODY back…Alabama was #5…SCAR…..#61!!!
The only thing I have to say is whatever site says that they project to be better on offense than uga and bama’s offense should be a site that you no longer visit…
good luck
@TrentMoney:
That same Gamecock Running back duo including “Brandon Wilds”,Brandon had THREE best SEC “freshman players of the week” in 7 games of play when he was healthy in 2011. So,SOMEBODY has a different opinion than yours about his very good running. Also,
allow me to aid a failing memory:
THAT SAME “#1” YARDs PER Play of your UGA to Caroli-na’s “#61” SCORED A PITIFUL 7 POINTS against us, Oct. 6,2012. You scored a pitiful 7 points wHEN WE PUT IN OUR BACKUPS !! (We scored 35,Dude !)
So,GOOD LUCK to YOU on SEPT 7,2013. Since you chose to speak as one of the few arro-gant, disrespectful DAWGs on a Gamecock-appreciative site,CAN YOU Also eat FOUR IN A ROW ?
Get back with me on Sept 8th,man.
i’m not a dawg or a gamecock…i wager on college sports…that’s what this site is about…

3 freshman of the week? so what? how many freshmen rbs or qbs or full time starters were there that season anyway?? i mean, it’s a weekly award…someone has to win it…did he win it the week he gained 100yds on The Citadel..?? who cares about a weekly award that some voters choose…look at stats and watch the tape
you want to make a gentleman’s wager on Wilds this year?? How about when his eligibility is up? I bet he doesn’t even get drafted…in fact i bet he doesn’t even get invited to a training camp…JAG (just a guy)…there’s 250 Brandon Wilds in CFB every year
Don’t let those garnet colored glasses blur your vision
Let’s talk at the 1/4 season mark see how our boy Brandon is doing…i have no problem admitting if i’m wrong…just don’t think i will be
good luck
FWIW prior to week 9 in 2011 Wilds only had about 15 carries. Week 9 vs Tenn 29 – 137 4.9 avg. week 10 SC got beat by Ark had to play catch up few rushes. Week 11 vs Fla 29 – 120 4.1 avg. Then week 12 vs Citadel 20 – 109 5.5 avg. I realize Tenn and Fla were not powerhouses in 2011 but Wilds still had 257 yards against 2 SEC defenses.
