Michigan State Football 2013 Spring Wrap Up

Michigan State Football 2013 Spring Wrap Up

Spring summary

The biggest questions heading into spring were on the offensive side of the ball, and I’m not sure any of them were answered. At one point, the defenses were outscoring the offenses 14-3.

The quarterbacks looked shaky, the running backs struggled to pick up yards and the receivers continued to drop balls. Of course, the defenses played a part in that, and this year’s defense could be even better than last year’s top-five unit.

A few unknown players who could have breakout seasons

Defensive end Shilique Calhoun replaces NFL Draft pick William Gholston and could very well be an upgrade. The coaches have raved about his pass-rushing ability for years, and he locked down the open starting spot with a great spring.

Wide receiver Aaron Burbridge missed the early part of last season due to injury, but the true freshman quickly became MSU’s best playmaker in the receiving corps when he debuted. He should be the No. 1 guy this year and has plenty of skill and big-play ability to help the quarterbacks.

OL: B

DL: A-

LB: A+

DB: A

ST: B

2013 Surprises?

I guess the only surprise that can happen is MSU’s offense as a whole turn out to be at least average. There is talent on this side of the ball, but one breakdown somewhere tears down the whole thing.

An easier schedule should leave more room for error compared to a year ago, but we’re going to have to see offensive improvement before we can believe it.
