Oklahoma Football 2013 Spring Wrap Up
Oklahoma Football 2013 Spring Wrap Up
Spring Summary
I try to take a cautious approach to judgments about spring football, especially when practices and scrimmages are closed off to the public and media.
With that in mind, the big story this spring was the quarterback derby. Blake Bell gave a pretty strong answer to that question in the spring game. Based on what I saw in the spring game, he has the job locked up.
Name a few unknown players who could have breakout seasons
Cornerback Cortez Johnson followed Mike Stoops from Arizona and sat out last season. From the sound of it, he has sewn up the spot opposite Aaron Colvin and has major potential.
I was also really impressed with Trey Franks in the spring game. He sat out last year on suspension and made the switch from receiver to safety in that period. He showed a great ability to close on the ball and is a solid tackler. I think he could contribute on defense this fall.
Grade each position group & special teams
QB: B-
RB: B
WR: A- This is easily the best position group on the squad,
TE: D
OL: B-
DL: C
LB: C+
DB: B
ST: C- The punting game looked horrendous in the spring game.
Are there any “surprises” we can expect from this team?
All three of the quarterback candidates can move, which is a big departure from Landry Jones. You could see some of the elements of an expanded QB run game in the spring game, and the offense is incorporating the Pistol. I’m excited to see how it plays out.
